Shop Pneumatic Casters

Pneumatic casters roll on air-filled or foam-filled tires that absorb shock and bridge cracks, gravel, and dock plates that solid wheels slam over. They are the standard for outdoor carts, generator and equipment movers, and rough-terrain handling. CasterHQ stocks 8-inch through 16-inch pneumatic and no-flat foam-filled casters from 250 lb to 7,600 lb dual-wheel, shipping same day from Mansfield, TX.

  • Air vs foam: air-filled for the softest ride, foam-filled for no-flat, no-downtime service
  • Size by terrain: 8-10 in for smooth and gravel, 12-16 in for rough outdoor
  • Over 600 lb per caster? Step up to dual-wheel pneumatic, to 7,600 lb

Pneumatic Caster Comparison

Pneumatic gives the softest ride; foam-filled is punctureless. Sized by wheel diameter and configuration. For 600+ lb single-caster capacity, step up to dual-wheel pneumatic.

Diameter Type Capacity Configuration Best For
8 in 4-Ply Air 250 lb Rigid / Swivel / Brake Generator carts, light outdoor utility
10 in 4-Ply Air 350 lb Rigid / Swivel / Brake Outdoor utility carts, equipment movers
8 x 3 in Foam-Filled Poly 275 lb Swivel / Rigid Punctureless service over gravel
10 x 3 in Foam-Filled Poly 280-300 lb Swivel Heavy outdoor service carts
12 in Pneumatic 4-Ply Air 450 lb Swivel / Rigid Heavy generator and equipment carts
16 in Pneumatic 4-Ply Air 600 lb Swivel / Rigid Rough-terrain mobile equipment
Dual-wheel 8-10 in Pneumatic 1,200-2,400 lb Heavy-duty swivel Heavy outdoor industrial carts
Dual-wheel 12-16 in Pneumatic 4,000-7,600 lb Heavy-duty swivel Outdoor industrial equipment movers

How to Choose

1. Match Wheel Size to Terrain

Smooth concrete or asphalt: 6-8 in works. Gravel, grass, dock plates: 10 in or larger. Rough outdoor terrain: 12-16 in. Larger wheels absorb shock and bridge uneven surfaces.

2. Air vs Foam-Filled

Pneumatic gives the softest ride at the lowest cost. Foam-filled is about 20% heavier and rides slightly firmer but cannot puncture. Pick foam-filled when downtime from a flat is unacceptable.

3. Capacity Per Caster

Total cart weight divided by number of casters, then add 40% safety margin for rough terrain shock. For 1,000+ lb single-caster capacity, step up to dual-wheel pneumatic, we stock 1,200 to 7,600 lb dual-wheel sets.

4. Brake Requirement

Swivel with brake is essential on sloped ramps, loading docks, and any cart that must stop and stay. Plain swivel is acceptable for level outdoor floors.

Engineer Tip: On 4-ply pneumatic tires, the recommended pressure is 30-35 PSI cold. Underinflation kills tubes from sidewall flex; overinflation reduces ride quality and tire life. Check pressure monthly, outdoor temperature swings 1-2 PSI per 10 degrees F. Carry one spare 10 in tube per cart in service.

How CasterHQ Selects and Verifies Pneumatic Casters

First-hand from our Mansfield, TX warehouse and engineering desk.

We stock 4-ply industrial pneumatic tires, not the 2-ply lawn-equipment grade, across the full 8-inch to 16-inch range, plus closed-cell foam-filled no-flat versions for service that cannot take downtime. Tubes and tire-only replacements are kept on the shelf because on a pneumatic caster the tube fails before the wheel does.

Tell us the terrain, the total load, and whether a flat would stop the job, and we match air against foam-filled and single against dual-wheel before you buy. Stock pneumatic casters picked before 3pm CT ship the same day from Mansfield.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between pneumatic and foam-filled?

Pneumatic uses an inflated rubber tube and tire, soft ride, lowest cost, can puncture. Foam-filled uses closed-cell polyurethane foam in place of air, punctureless, holds shape, slightly heavier and firmer ride.

Can I run pneumatic casters indoors on smooth concrete?

Yes, they roll smoothly, but they are over-spec for indoor-only use and the larger diameter raises the cart deck. For indoor-only carts, 4-6 in polyurethane or thermo rubber gives lower rolling resistance.

How long do pneumatic tires last?

Stored indoors, properly inflated, on a properly sized cart: 3-5 years. Outdoor storage in UV sunlight: 1-3 years. Foam-filled lasts longer in UV but is still subject to compound aging.

What is a 4-ply pneumatic tire?

Ply rating describes the number of reinforcement layers in the tire casing. 4-ply is the standard for industrial caster pneumatics. 2-ply lawn-equipment grade is too light for industrial service.

Do you sell replacement tubes and tires separately?

Yes, 8 in and 10 in tubes and tire-only options are available under hand truck parts. Tube failures are the most common issue; replacing the tube is faster and cheaper than the whole wheel.

What capacity do dual-wheel pneumatic casters provide?

Dual-wheel 8-10 in pneumatic: 1,200-2,400 lb per caster. Dual-wheel 12-16 in pneumatic: 4,000-7,600 lb per caster, on heavy-duty swivel rigs with sealed precision bearings.

Can I use pneumatic casters in cold weather?

Pneumatic rubber stiffens below 0 degrees F and tube pressure drops. Foam-filled stays flexible to minus 20 degrees F. For far-north winter outdoor service or freezer-yard handling, foam-filled is the safer choice.

Will pneumatic casters work on AGVs and motorized carts?

Yes, but expect higher rolling resistance than poly or thermo wheels. Pneumatic absorbs vibration, useful for unsealed-electronics carts but bad for motor amp draw. Most AGVs use polyurethane.
