Hamilton dual-wheel pneumatic casters put two air-filled tires side by side on one forged rig, roughly doubling capacity over a single tire and spreading the load on soft ground. Sizes run from the 8 in S-7208 and R-7208 at 620 lb to the 21 in models at 7,700 lb per caster, in swivel (S) and rigid (R) versions on plates up to 8-1/2 x 8-1/2 in. Keep both tires at the same pressure, since a low tire shifts load to its partner. Single-tire air and foam-filled models are with all pneumatic casters.

Note that the 25 in model is rated a little below the 21 in. Pick by the rating, not by tire size.

What these are built for

Hamilton designed the 7200 series for aircraft and aerospace ground support, construction and other outdoor work, and for shock protection on heavy equipment [S2]. Two tires give a wider footprint, so the caster sinks less on turf and gravel and is steadier under a tall load. Air tires also let you tune cushion: lower pressure for a softer ride on lighter loads, full pressure for full capacity and easiest rolling [S3].

Limits

Temperature. Hamilton's pneumatic tires are rated -30 to 120°F [S4]. Keep them away from heat sources.
Chemicals and abrasion. Rubber pneumatic tires rate low on both [S4].
Width and swivel room. Duals are much wider than a single tire. Check clearance under the frame for a full 360° swivel.
Flats. Hamilton offers foam-filled tires and gray non-marking tires as factory options [S2]. Ask us before ordering if you need either.

Single or dual?

A single Hamilton Cush-N-Aire pneumatic tops out at 4,050 lb on our page, against 7,700 lb for the 21 in dual [S1]. If your load per caster is under about 1,000 lb, a single pneumatic caster is lighter, narrower and cheaper.

Sizing

Divide the total load by one fewer than the number of casters, to allow for uneven ground [S5].
Pick the smallest size whose rating clears that number, then check overall height and plate fit.
Pair swivels and rigids for steering on towed equipment.

Why use dual wheels instead of one tire?

Two tires carry more and spread the load. On this page the 21 in dual is rated 7,700 lb, while the largest single pneumatic is 4,050 lb.

What PSI do the tires run?

Use the rating on the tire and listing. Hamilton lists 125 psi max for the 21 in S-72210-PR. Keep both tires on a caster at the same pressure.

Can I get foam-filled tires on these?

Hamilton offers foam-filled tires as an option on the 7200 series. Contact us with the model number.

What is the difference between S and R models?

S is swivel and R is rigid. Each size comes in both with matching heights.
