How to Choose

1. Singles vs Set of 4

Single casters when you're replacing one failed caster on an existing cart — match the wheel material and capacity to the other 3. Set of 4 when building a new cart or retrofitting an entire stand. Sets are cheaper per caster than 4 singles.

2. Configuration

All-swivel: maximum maneuverability, ideal for tight workspace carts. 2-swivel + 2-rigid: stable straight-line travel with rear steering. 2-lock + 2-rigid: stable cart with positive corner lock. All-4-locking: required for industrial safety on slopes or operator-loaded carts.

3. TPR vs FX Formula XS

Standard Thermo Plastic Rubber (TPR): gray non-marking, food-service ready, best on smooth finished floors. FX Formula XS: improved abrasion resistance and chemical compatibility, slightly higher cost. Choose FX for chemical handling or higher-cycle service.

4. Plate Match

All 4" rubber wheel casters in this collection use the standard 2-3/8" x 3-5/8" four-bolt plate. Match this to your cart top plate or specify the alternate 4" x 4-1/2" plate (more common on heavier industrial).

Engineer Tip: For new builds, sets of 4 deliver about 25% lower per-caster cost vs buying 4 singles. The trade-off is no mix-and-match — you commit to one configuration. If you might need to swap one caster for a different type (locking vs plain) later, sometimes buying 2 sets of singles gives more flexibility long-term despite the higher upfront cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TPR?

Thermoplastic Rubber. A modern rubber compound that blends the elasticity of natural rubber with the moldability of thermoplastics. Result: a non-marking, quiet, easy-rolling wheel that resists oils and mild chemicals better than natural rubber. Gray TPR is the most common color — food-service safe and non-marking on light flooring.

What is FX Formula XS?

FX Formula XS is an upgraded TPR compound with higher abrasion resistance and broader chemical compatibility. Costs ~15% more than standard TPR. Specified where carts see heavy daily cycles or contact with cleaning chemicals. For light commercial use, standard TPR is sufficient.

Are 4" rubber wheel casters non-marking?

Yes — the gray TPR tread is explicitly non-marking. Safe for VCT, polished concrete, vinyl, hardwood, and finished tile. Black-tread variants (less common in our 4" stock) are marking and only suitable for shop floors and warehouse concrete.

What plate size do these casters use?

Standard 2-3/8" x 3-5/8" four-bolt plate — the dominant light-to-medium industrial plate size. Compatible with most pre-fab carts, work tables, and equipment stands designed for 4" casters. If your cart uses 4" x 4-1/2" plate, that's a different (heavier) caster line.

What is the capacity of a 4 inch rubber wheel caster?

Single: 300 lb per caster. Set of 4 all-swivel: 1,200 lb total. Set of 4 with 2 swivel + 2 non-locking swivel: 1,260 lb (slightly higher because rigid casters carry more than swivel for the same wheel). Don't exceed total set rating on heavy carts.

Can I mix locking and non-locking in a set of 4?

Yes — we stock pre-configured sets with 2 locking + 2 plain swivel, 2 locking + 2 rigid, and other variants. Mixed sets give you stop capability without the higher cost of 4 locking casters. The 2+2 mix is the most common cart configuration in light commercial service.

Do these fit work tables?

Yes — 4" TPR casters with 2-3/8" x 3-5/8" plate are the dominant configuration for prep tables, retail display racks, equipment stands, and tool tables. Confirm your table's existing plate size before ordering.

How long do TPR rubber wheels last?

On light commercial floors with 1-2 shifts per day: 5-8 years before tread wear. On polished concrete with daily heavy cycles: 3-5 years. On rough warehouse concrete with debris exposure: 2-3 years. Failure mode is tread wear — the hub and bearing typically outlive the rubber compound.
