The below capacity ranges indicate the working (dynamic) load that each caster will support. A safety factor should be included in your formula to determine your required load rating per caster.
W/(C-1)=R W is total weight needed to move. C is total number of casters required. R is ideal load rating, with safety factor built in. Divide the total load weight by one less caster than you will use to safely determine load rating.

Standard heavy industrial casters use one wheel per caster — load deflection at the wheel face is concentrated on a single contact patch. Hamilton’s UltraGlide Quad-Wheel uses four smaller wheels mounted on a shared platform under a single yoke — load distributes across four contact patches, dramatically reducing wheel deflection at the same total capacity. The result: lower rolling resistance under load (the cart pushes easier) and longer wheel service life. The trade-off is more complexity per caster and slightly higher cost.
Ball bearing (open) for indoor dry environments with regular maintenance — the bearings need periodic lubrication. Sealed bearing for washdown, outdoor, or hard-to-maintain applications where contamination is the risk — the sealed assembly is maintenance-free for typical service life. Sealed costs about 15-20% more than open ball bearing.
Wheel-only replacement for existing 8″ x 4″ heavy industrial caster yokes where the polyurethane tread has worn through but the yoke and bearing assembly are still tight. Common on foundry and steel mill carts that see continuous heavy duty. Costs about 35-45% of a full caster replacement.
