Caster Replacement Finder

CasterHQ Engineering Tools

Find the exact replacement caster by part number, mount type, wheel size, load, or uploaded photos, then have a CasterHQ specialist confirm the fit. Built for OEM, MRO, and facility teams who need the exact match, not the closest guess.

How to identify a replacement caster: match five things, the mount type (plate or stem), wheel diameter, wheel width, overall mounted height, and the load each caster carries. For plate casters, add the top-plate size and bolt-hole spacing; for stem casters, add the stem type and diameter. Caster load ratings follow the ANSI/ICWM-2018 standard.

Measurement Guide

How to Measure a Replacement Caster

Eight measurements identify almost any caster. Measure to the nearest 1/16 inch and note whether the unit swivels, is rigid, or has a brake.

How to measure a caster for replacement: record eight dimensions, the wheel diameter, wheel width, overall mounted height, top-plate length and width, bolt-hole spacing, stem diameter, and stem length, plus the load carried per caster. Measure to the nearest 1/16 inch and note swivel, rigid, or brake. These terms follow the ICWM caster and wheel vocabulary.

Wheel diameter

Measure straight across the wheel through the center, edge to edge, with the caster off the ground.

Wheel width

Measure the thickness of the wheel across the tread face, the dimension that contacts the floor.

Overall height

Top of the mounting plate or base of the stem down to the floor. This sets the ride height of the equipment.

Top plate size

Measure the full length and width of the rectangular mounting plate, outer edge to outer edge.

Bolt hole spacing

Center-to-center distance between bolt holes, measured both length and width (and diagonally if staggered).

Stem diameter

For stem casters, measure the diameter of the stem. Note the type: threaded, round, grip-ring, or expanding.

Stem length

Measure from the top of the swivel section to the end of the stem. Include thread length if threaded.

Load capacity

Divide the total loaded weight by the number of casters, then add a safety margin. When in doubt, send the equipment weight and we will calculate it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I identify a replacement caster?
Start with four things: mount type (plate or stem), wheel diameter, wheel width, and the load each caster carries. Add the top plate size and bolt pattern for plate casters, or the stem type and diameter for stem casters. Use the Search by Specs finder above, or upload photos with a tape measure for scale and our team will confirm the match.
What photos should I upload?
A full photo of the caster, a close-up of the wheel, a close-up of the mounting plate or stem, the bolt pattern with a tape measure in frame, any stamped part number, and a photo of the equipment it mounts to. These six views let us match size, mount, and wheel material accurately.
How do I measure caster wheel diameter?
With the caster off the ground, measure straight across the wheel through the center, from one outer edge to the other. Measure the tread thickness separately for wheel width.
How do I measure a caster mounting plate?
Measure the full length and width of the plate, outer edge to outer edge, then measure the center-to-center distance between bolt holes in both directions. Note whether the holes are slotted or round.
How do I measure a threaded stem caster?
Measure the stem diameter across the threads, then the stem length from the top of the swivel section to the end of the stem. Identify the stem type: threaded, round, grip-ring, or expanding adapter. Thread pitch helps confirm threaded stems.
What if I do not know the load capacity?
Send the total loaded weight of the equipment and the number of casters supporting it. We divide the load across the casters, add a safety margin for movement and uneven floors, and recommend a rated capacity. You do not need to calculate it yourself.
Can CasterHQ match an old or discontinued caster?
Often, yes. Many legacy casters share standard plate sizes, bolt patterns, and wheel dimensions with current products. Send photos, measurements, and any part number, and we will identify the closest current equivalent or a suitable upgrade.
Can I request a bulk quote for replacement casters?
Yes. CasterHQ supports quotes, purchase orders, and bulk pricing for OEM, MRO, and facility orders. Include the quantity needed with your request and our team will prepare a quote.
