How to choose a platform truck or caddy

Pick by deck size and route first, then caster package, then handle configuration.

  • Full-size loads: the 3950-series 30" x 54" steel deck carries 2,400 lb of furniture, partitions, or boxed freight.
  • Tight corridors and elevators: the mini 36" x 24" trucks (Models 3941/3942) rate 850 lb and come with brakes standard.
  • Noise-sensitive buildings: choose the 8" quiet-rolling poly caster packages (Models 3957/3958, 3967/3968). Standard packages suit warehouses and docks.
  • Push from both ends: dual-handle models (3960/3964, 3967/3968) let two workers steer long loads through turns.
  • Long, narrow, or bundled stock: HD caddies (350 lb) hold it upright in a vinyl-coated channel; the pipe rack adds brakes for round stock.

Engineer tip

Rated capacity assumes the load is spread across the deck. Point loads, a machine base or a stone slab on two skids, concentrate weight on two casters, so derate by a third when the load does not cover at least half the deck. And if the truck will be loaded on any ramp, order brakes; 2,400 lb rolls itself.

Platform truck questions, answered

What is the capacity of a Raymond platform truck?

Full-size 30" x 54" models are rated 2,400 lb; the compact 36" x 24" mini trucks are rated 850 lb. Spread the load across the deck to use the full rating, and see the note on point loads in the engineer tip above.

Which caster package is quietest?

The 8" quiet-rolling polyurethane packages on Models 3957/3958 and 3967/3968. They are the standard pick for hotels, schools, hospitals, and any occupied building where a steel-deck truck would otherwise echo down the hall.

Why choose dual handles?

A second removable handle lets a worker at each end steer long or top-heavy loads through corners, doorways, and elevators. On straight warehouse runs a single handle is fine and costs less.

What are the caddies for?

Long, narrow, or bundled material that tips over on a flat deck: trim, conduit, banquet table legs, rolled goods. The vinyl-coated channel protects finishes, Models 485 and 490 add removable uprights, and all four rate 350 lb.

Do trucks come with brakes?

Mini trucks include brakes standard. Full-size trucks offer brake options on their caster packages, and genuine OEM brake kits and replacement casters are in our Raymond parts collection.

Raymond heavy-duty platform trucks put a 30" x 54" steel deck rated 2,400 lb under furniture, partitions, and general freight, with a compact 36" x 24" mini truck rated 850 lb for tight routes. Vinyl-coated HD caddies (350 lb) and braked pipe racks cover the long, awkward loads a flat deck cannot. Made in USA since 1958, lifetime warranty.

  • Single or dual removable handles; brakes standard on mini trucks, optional elsewhere
  • 8" quiet-rolling polyurethane caster packages for occupied buildings
