How to choose a dolly

Size the deck to the load footprint and the rating to the heaviest single item, not the average.

  • Heavy and compact (appliances, crates, safes under 800 lb): Royal dollies. The 14" x 26" Model 1420 turns tightest; the 24" x 36" Model 1436 carries the widest footprint.
  • General facility use under 400-550 lb: Model 3300 or the four-wheel Model 3400 cost less and cover daily moves.
  • Drums and barrels: add the Model 1450 barrel cradle to a 1420 or 1430 Royal dolly instead of buying a dedicated drum truck.
  • Stairs, curbs, and hand-truck work: the Model 770 two-wheeler with airless tires, rated 600 lb.
  • Schools and libraries: the student desk mover and V-shaped book cart are purpose-built and non-marring.

Engineer tip

On a four-wheel dolly, uneven floors mean three wheels carry the load at any moment, so derate total capacity by a third when the floor is rough or ramped. And put the heavy end of the load over the fixed casters if the dolly has them; steering stays predictable and the deck will not walk sideways on you.

Dolly questions, answered

What is the difference between a Royal dolly and an all-purpose dolly?

Capacity and deck build. Royal dollies rate 800 lb on non-skid vinyl-coated steel decks in three sizes. All-purpose Models 3300 and 3400 rate 400 and 550 lb, cost less, and cover routine facility moves.

Will the vinyl coating protect wood furniture?

Yes, that is its job. The non-skid vinyl coating grips the load without scratching finished surfaces, and the non-marring casters do the same for floors. It is why these dollies are standard issue with moving companies and school districts.

Can I move drums with these?

Yes. The Model 1450 barrel cradle attachment fits Royal Models 1420 and 1430 and cradles a drum on its side. For upright drum moves at higher weights, call 844-439-4335 and we will spec the right equipment.

Which dolly for a school district order?

The student desk mover and V-shaped book cart are the purpose-built picks, with all-purpose 3300s for general use. District and multi-site orders qualify for bulk pricing; send the list through the bulk quote form.

Are replacement casters available?

Yes, genuine OEM non-marring casters and hardware for every dolly in this collection are stocked in Raymond replacement parts.
