All measurements indicate the wheel diameter by the tread width.
The below capacity ranges indicate the working (dynamic) load that each caster will support. A safety factor should be included in your formula to determine your required load rating per caster.
W/(C-1)=R W is total weight needed to move. C is total number of casters required. R is ideal load rating, with safety factor built in. Divide the total load weight by one less caster than you will use to safely determine load rating.
Plate dimensions shown are overall mounting plate size.
When replacing existing casters, select the closest plate size and verify bolt-hole compatibility.
BHP = Bolt Hole Pattern, shown under each plate.
The 6″ x 2″ caster is heavy-duty industrial spec — the step up from 5″ x 2″ when you need more capacity, larger floor-seam crossing capability, or one of the specialty configurations like spring-loaded shock-absorbing, V-groove track-running, or polyurethane on aluminum washdown. 1,381 styles stocked, the largest single wheel-size collection in our catalog, spanning every standard material class plus four specialty variants. Capacity range: 500 lb mold-on rubber up to 5,000 lb red poly on iron.

| Material | Capacity Range | Plate Standard | Specialty Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mold-On Rubber | 500-550 lb | 4″ x 4-1/2″ | Quiet rolling, hospital, library |
| Polyurethane on Polyolefin | 800-1,200 lb | 4″ x 4-1/2″ | Daily-use industrial, long service life |
| Polyurethane on Aluminum | 1,250 lb | 4″ x 4-1/2″ | Washdown, food, pharma, marine |
| Semi-Steel / Gray Iron | 1,200-1,500 lb | 4″ x 4-1/2″ | Warehouse, rough floors, debris |
| Phenolic | 1,000-1,200 lb | 4″ x 4-1/2″ | Heat to 450°F (paint booth, bakery) |
| Cast Iron V-Groove | 1,000 lb | 4″ x 4-1/2″ | Track-running, conveyor, gantry crane |
| Spring-Loaded Polyurethane | 1,000 lb | Specialty | Shock absorption, sensitive cargo |
| Red Poly on Iron (HD) | 2,500-5,000 lb | 4″ x 4-1/2″ / 4-1/2″ x 6-1/4″ | Heavy industrial transport, towlines |
| Wheel-Only Replacement | 500-1,500 lb | By material | Yoke still good, only tread worn |
Three triggers move you from 5″ x 2″ up to 6″ x 2″: (1) capacity need above 4,400 lb per caster — the 6″ size reaches 5,000 lb on red poly on iron; (2) floor with thresholds, expansion joints, or debris — the 1″ larger diameter rolls over obstacles 30-40% easier; (3) one of the specialty variants (spring-loaded, V-groove, ATX off-road) that aren’t offered at 5″ x 2″.
Yes — about 1/2″ per corner vs. the 5″ x 2″ equivalent. Total cart deck height goes up by 1″ (each corner raises by 1/2″ due to wheel diameter difference). For most carts that’s fine. For carts that must clear under doorways, dock plates, or shelving with tight overhead, verify clearance before upsizing.
5,000 lb per caster on the red polyurethane on cast iron variant. That gives a 4-caster cart 20,000 lb static capacity. Above 5,000 lb at this size, you need to move to kingpinless construction or the dual-wheel design. See Kingpinless Casters for higher-capacity 6″ configurations.
A coil spring inside the caster yoke connects the wheel axle to the top plate. When the wheel hits a floor seam or threshold, the spring compresses (typically 1/4″ to 1/2″ of travel) absorbing the shock before it transfers up to the cart deck. The result: a fully loaded cart of sensitive equipment rolls over a 1/2″ threshold without jolting. Trade-off: the spring-loaded variant costs 30-50% more than the standard equivalent.
An inverted-V steel rail welded or anchored to the floor. The wheel’s V-groove sits on top of the V-rail with the wheel face perpendicular — gravity keeps the wheel centered, and the wheel can roll forward and backward along the track. Used for production-line conveyors, factory transfer systems, gantry crane runways, and any application where the cart needs to roll along a fixed path. See our broader V-Track collection.
Phenolic for heat (up to 450°F continuous) and for cost savings (typically 20-30% less than poly). Polyurethane for daily-use service life (8-12 years on smooth concrete) and floor protection. Phenolic chips on rough floors and debris. Polyurethane handles rough floors but softens above 180°F. Pick by environment.
The dominant plate is 4″ x 4-1/2″ — same medium-heavy industrial mount as 5″ x 2″. Heavier-capacity red poly variants (above 3,000 lb per caster) typically use the larger 4-1/2″ x 6-1/4″ plate. Verify your existing equipment plate before ordering.
Hamilton, Albion, Faultless, Caster Concepts, Service Caster, Colson, plus Sirius HD house brand all stocked at 6″ x 2″. Engineer cross-reference between brands: one business day response. Stock orders ship same day from Mansfield, TX before 3 pm Central. Heavier red-poly and kingpinless variants may ship LTL freight depending on quantity.
