Wire Shelving Caster Comparison

Compare wire shelving caster configurations by wheel size, material, lock type, and capacity. All fit the standard 1-inch shelf post used on Metro, InterMetro, Quantum, Eagle, and most U.S. wire rack systems.

Wheel Size Material Capacity Lock Best For
3" Wheel Polyurethane 300 lb Swivel Light commercial shelving, retail back rooms
3" Wheel Polyurethane 300 lb Total Lock Shelving that must hold position when loaded
4" Wheel Polyurethane 300 lb Swivel Mid-duty wire racks, commercial kitchen
5" Wheel Polyurethane 300 lb Swivel Heavy wire shelving, threshold crossing
5" Wheel TPR Rubber 250 lb Swivel or Brake Hospital, lab, food service (quiet)

How to Choose Wire Shelving Casters

1. Confirm Your Shelving Post Diameter

The vast majority of U.S. wire shelving (Metro, InterMetro, Quantum, Eagle) uses a 1-inch outer diameter post with a tapered split end and a notched groove. These casters are designed for that 1-inch post. If your shelving has a different post diameter (smaller European systems often use 25mm or 19mm), measure first.

2. Pick Wheel Size for Floor

3-inch wheels for indoor smooth floors and tight aisle clearance. 4-inch and 5-inch for larger wire racks, uneven floors, threshold crossing, and warehouse environments. Larger wheels roll over obstacles better but raise overall shelf height.

3. Locking vs Free-Swivel

If the shelving will be moved frequently and parked in various spots: free-swivel. If the shelving holds inventory and must stay put when loaded: total lock (wheel + swivel) or side-lock brake. Hospital, lab, and food service environments usually want lock.

4. Polyurethane vs TPR Rubber Wheels

Polyurethane handles higher load (300 lb), is non-marking, and is the default for retail and commercial. TPR rubber is quieter, gentler on tile and vinyl, but lower capacity (250 lb). Hospital and food service typically want TPR.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size wire shelving caster do I need?

The wheel size depends on use: 3-inch for indoor smooth-floor light shelving. 4-inch or 5-inch for mid-duty or heavy wire racks. The post-fitment is the same on all our casters: 1-inch standard post.

Do these fit Metro / InterMetro shelving?

Yes — these are designed for the standard 1-inch outer-diameter post used by Metro, InterMetro, Quantum, Eagle, and most U.S. wire shelving brands. If your shelf is European or older than 1990, measure first.

How are wire shelving casters installed?

Remove the existing foot cap from each shelving post. The caster has a tapered insert sized to the 1-inch post. Push the caster firmly onto the post until the friction lock engages. Tap with a rubber mallet to seat fully. No tools beyond a mallet required.

What's the weight capacity?

Most polyurethane wire shelving casters are rated 300 lb per caster. A 4-caster shelving unit handles 1,200 lb total. TPR rubber variants are rated 250 lb (1,000 lb total). Add 25 percent headroom over expected load.

Do they have a brake?

Many variants include a side-lock brake or total lock so the shelving holds position when loaded. Pick locking if the unit holds inventory; pick free-swivel if it moves constantly.

Are these non-marking?

Polyurethane and TPR rubber wheels are both non-marking on tile, vinyl, and polished concrete. Both work well in retail, commercial kitchen, hospital, and food service.

Can I replace existing casters?

Yes — if your shelving currently has different casters, remove the old ones (usually a press-out from the post) and press the new CasterHQ casters in. Same 1-inch fit covers virtually any replacement scenario.

How fast do they ship?

99 percent of orders ship same or next business day from our Mansfield, TX facility via FedEx Ground. Cutoff 2pm Central.
