6" x 2-1/2" Casters & Wheels

The 6″ x 2-1/2″ size hits the workhorse middle of industrial mobility: enough diameter to roll over warehouse expansion joints and threshold gaps, enough tread width to spread load across rated floor surfaces. Capacity ranges from 720 lb (toolbox builds) up to 1,500 lb (heavy-duty swivel) per caster — the most common single-caster spec across food service, lab, medical, and material handling.

Four tread options — pick by environment

Most-ordered

Polyurethane on Iron

900–1,500 lb

Non-marking TPU tread on cast iron core. Chemical resistant, quiet, floor-protective. Default for indoor industrial.

Outdoor / rough

Pneumatic

300–500 lb

Air-filled tire absorbs rough surfaces — gravel, broken concrete, dock plate gaps. Less capacity but rides smooth.

Heavy duty

Forged Steel

2,000–3,000 lb

Maximum capacity at this size. For steel-on-steel rolling or extreme-duty industrial routes.

Food / sanitary

Stainless Steel

800–1,250 lb

304/316 stainless fork. For washdown, sanitary, or corrosive environments. FDA-compliant tread available.

Where the 6″ x 2-1/2″ size dominates

This size shows up across more applications than any other industrial caster spec because the diameter is large enough to roll over almost everything (threshold gaps, expansion joints, freight elevator transitions) and the tread width is wide enough to handle 1,000+ lb without floor damage. Major use cases:

  • Bakery and food service equipment — ovens, proofers, cooling racks. Often spec’d with stainless or high-temp polyurethane.
  • Hospital and laboratory equipment — mobile carts, equipment dollies, X-ray transfer. Non-marking is mandatory.
  • Material handling carts and platform trucks — the OEM size on most 1,000 lb platform trucks (B&P PT-3060, Magliner T-3060, etc.).
  • Hotel and institutional housekeeping — bell carts, linen carts, maintenance kits.
  • Toolbox sets — mechanic, machinist, fleet maintenance. Usually 4 casters as a kit, 720 lb total capacity is standard.

Common 6″ x 2-1/2″ questions

What’s the capacity difference vs 6″ x 2″?The half-inch wider tread on 6 x 2.5 adds about 200–400 lb capacity at the same diameter, plus better floor protection on rated industrial floors.
Polyurethane or pneumatic for outdoor work?Pneumatic for gravel, broken pavement, or curb crossings. Polyurethane for smooth outdoor concrete. Pneumatic loses capacity (300–500 lb vs 1,500 lb).
Will these fit standard 4-bolt plate patterns?Yes — most 6 x 2.5 casters use the standard 4″ x 4-1/2″ or 4-1/2″ x 6-1/4″ top plate pattern. Confirm before ordering for retrofits.
Do you offer toolbox kits in this size?Yes — 6 x 2.5 polyurethane is the standard toolbox kit size. 720 lb total per kit of 4.
Stainless for food production — is 304 or 316 right?304 stainless for most food production. 316 for caustic washdown (pharma, dairy, marine processing).
