What each tread does in a kitchen

Phenolic is a hard resin wheel that holds its shape near heat and rolls easily on tile and sealed concrete, but it is loud and can chip on broken floors [S2]. Glass-filled nylon and epoxy are the oven-rack choices because they keep their rating at temperatures that would soften rubber. Polyolefin is a one-piece plastic wheel that does not absorb water and shrugs off grease and most cleaning chemicals, which makes it a cold-room and dish-room wheel [S3]. Polyurethane and TPR are the quiet, floor-friendly treads for front-of-house carts and prep tables.

Mounts you will find here

  • Top plates: 2-3/8 x 3-5/8 in on most light units, 3-1/8 x 4-1/8 in on oven racks and pan dollies, 4 x 4-1/2 in on heavier phenolic and polyolefin casters.
  • Expanding stems: rubber adapters that grip inside round or square leg tubing, sized by the tube's inside diameter.
  • Threaded and grip ring stems: for equipment with a tapped leg or a socket.

Before you order

  1. Check the heat. Match the wheel's listed temperature to the hottest place the equipment goes, not the room.
  2. Size the load. Divide the loaded weight by three for a four-caster unit, since one caster often carries little on an uneven floor [S4].
  3. Measure the mount. Plate size and bolt holes, or the inside diameter of the leg tube for an expanding stem.
  4. Add brakes on at least two casters for anything that has to stay put while in use.

Food service caster questions

Which casters can go in an oven?

Look at the listed temperature. High-temp phenolic is listed up to 525°F, epoxy at 475°F continuous and 550°F for up to 30 minutes, and glass-filled nylon from 425 to 550°F depending on the model.

What casters work in a walk-in cooler?

Polyolefin wheels are listed down to -40 or -45°F and do not absorb water, so they suit coolers, freezers and wet floors.

What casters fit a kitchen prep table leg?

Sets for 1-1/2 in ID leg tubing come in 3 and 4 in gray TPR, rubber and total lock versions. Expanding rubber adapters cover other tube sizes.

How much weight can food service casters hold?

Single casters here run from 200 to 1,200 lb each. Divide the loaded weight of the equipment by three to size each caster.
