Caster Wheel Bearings: Ball & Roller Replacement

Bores: 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 1 inTypes: straight roller, sealed precision ball, flanged ball
Replacement bearings for caster wheels. Roller bearings carry heavy, slow loads and are the usual bearing in industrial wheels. Sealed precision ball bearings roll the easiest and keep dirt and water out, and flanged ball bearings seat against the hub face. Measure the axle, the wheel bore and the hub length before ordering.

Signs a bearing has failed

  • The wheel feels gritty or rough when spun by hand.
  • The wheel rocks on the axle.
  • The cart pulls harder than it used to.

Replace bearings in pairs, and check the spanner bushing and axle while the wheel is off.

Caster bearing questions

Which bearing rolls easiest?

A sealed precision ball bearing. Roller bearings carry heavy loads but roll a little harder.

How do I size a caster bearing?

Measure the axle diameter (bearing ID), the wheel bore (bearing OD) and the hub length.

Should I replace both bearings?

Yes. Replace them as a pair and check the bushing and axle at the same time.
