3-1/2″ x 1-1/4″ Casters — In-Between Light-Medium Cart Spec, 192 Styles

The 3-1/2″ wheel size is the in-between spec. Slightly larger than 3″ for better floor-seam crossing without raising the cart deck the full inch that 4″ would. The 1-1/4″ tread width gives 250-300 lb capacity per caster — light-medium cart spec for service trucks, prep stations, hospitality carts, and light shop trucks. 192 styles on this page including polyurethane, TPR, and polyurethane on polyolefin variants in both plate and threaded-stem configurations.

Pick the right 3-1/2″ x 1-1/4″ in 30 seconds

If existing equipment uses the 3-1/8″ x 4-1/8″ plate

Spec the standard polyurethane swivel at 275 lb on this plate dimension. Most factory-built carts at this size class use this plate — matches B&P MFG light platform trucks and many service-cart OEMs.

If existing equipment uses 3/8″-16 threaded stem

Spec the TPR threaded stem variant at 250 lb. Common on shop-built equipment and threaded-frame furniture. The 3/8″-16 thread is the industry default at this size.

If you need wheel-only replacement (caster yoke is fine)

Spec the polyurethane on polyolefin replacement wheel at 300 lb — about 40% the cost of a full caster. Hub bore matches standard 5/16″ or 3/8″ axle.

If you’re unsure whether to use 3″ or 3-1/2″ or 4″

3″ for compact furniture / medical, 4″ for cart applications with floor seams. 3-1/2″ is the in-between when you need slightly more wheel diameter than 3″ but can’t raise the deck by the full inch that 4″ adds. Most buyers landing on this size are matching existing 3-1/2″ OEM spec.

Why is the 3-1/2″ size less common than 3″ or 4″?

It’s a deliberate compromise spec chosen by certain OEMs (B&P MFG light dollies, some service-cart manufacturers) when their equipment needs slightly more wheel diameter than 3″ but the cart deck height can’t accommodate the full 4″ wheel. If your equipment came with 3-1/2″ from the factory, replacement match keeps the deck height correct.

Can I substitute a 4″ x 1-1/4″ for a 3-1/2″ x 1-1/4″?

The plate and tread width often match, so the caster will bolt up. But the 1/2″ wheel diameter increase raises the cart deck by 1/4″ per corner (1/2″ total). Acceptable for some applications, dealbreaker for others — verify clearance under doorways, dock plates, and shelving.
