Grip Ring / Friction Ring Stem Casters

Grip ring stem casters—also known as friction ring stem casters—are designed for fast, press-in installation where access for a lock nut is not available. They are commonly specified for furniture, fixtures, carts, and light-to-medium duty equipment requiring a clean, compact mounting solution.

Typical wheel diameters range from 3" to 5", with load capacities up to 350 lbs per caster depending on wheel material and configuration.

How grip ring stems work

The stem is inserted into a drilled mounting hole—most commonly 7/16" diameter. A spring-steel grip ring compresses during insertion and expands once seated, creating a secure mechanical retention inside wood, metal tubing, or composite legs.

  • No threaded insert or rear access required
  • Ideal for furniture legs, displays, and enclosed tubing
  • Clean exterior appearance with minimal hardware

Common configurations

Typical stem size
7/16" diameter × ~1-3/8" length (model dependent)
Wheel materials
TPR, polyurethane, phenolic, steel

Options available for hard floors, concrete, and mixed surfaces
Typical use
Fixtures, seating, carts, light equipment

Wheel selection guidance

Choosing the right wheel material
  • Thermoplastic rubber (TPR): Quiet rolling, good obstacle absorption, and floor protection
  • Polyurethane: Higher capacity with good floor protection and long tread life
  • Semi-steel / steel: Best for smooth concrete and maximum durability where floor marking is not a concern
