How a grip ring stem holds

The stem is a smooth 7/16 in pin with a split steel ring near the top. Pushed into a snug hole or socket, the ring compresses and grips. It holds well in wood and in a matching socket, but it can work loose in an oversized or worn hole [S1].

Drill a 7/16 in hole in wood, or fit a grip ring socket in a tube.
