Stem Casters

These stem casters mount through a hole or socket instead of a bolt-on plate. Use them on chair legs, table bases, light carts, medical stands, and fixtures where there is no room for a top plate. Casters in this collection range from about 80 to 1,400 lb per caster. Mount with a threaded stem, grip-ring stem, expanding rubber stem for round and square tubing, or a square stem. Wheels in this category range from about 2 up to 8 in diameter. Most 3 to 5 in furniture and cart stems run in the 200 to 350 lb band. Soft rubber or TPR is the better pick when the floor has chips or grit. Choose swivel casters when the load must turn in place, and add a brake when it needs to stay put. Capacities below are per caster unless a listing says set. Threaded-only shortlist: threaded stem casters. Plate mounts: cart casters. Chair stems: chair casters.

How to measure

  1. Expanding stem: measure the inside of the tube, not the outside. Each expanding adapter is listed for a narrow tube range, such as 1-1/8 to 1-3/16 in.
  2. Threaded stem: measure across the threads and count threads per inch. 1/2-13 and 3/8-16 are the common sizes. Measure the length from the swivel to the tip.
  3. Grip ring stem: measure the stem diameter and length. 7/16 x 1-3/8 in is the usual size for carts and furniture.
