How to read a Hamilton part number

In the titles here, S- marks a swivel caster and R- a rigid one, followed by the rig series and the wheel code, for example S-WH-6NYB or R-FM-83GB95 [S2]. If the old caster still carries its stamp, search that number first. If not, measure the plate, wheel diameter and tread width, and note the rig height.

Choosing a Hamilton caster

  1. Load per caster. Divide the loaded weight by three on four casters, to allow for an uneven floor [S3].
  2. Floor and debris. Polyurethane protects concrete and runs quietly; cast iron, forged steel and phenolic roll easiest but are loud and hard on floors.
  3. Shock and towing. Kingpinless and spring-loaded rigs are built for impact, dock plates and tow-line work.
  4. Heat and washdown. Pick a high-heat steel or nylon wheel for ovens and furnaces, and stainless rigs with polyolefin for wet areas.
