Single or dual wheel

A dual wheel caster splits the load between two wheels on one axle. Each wheel can turn at its own speed, so the caster swivels with less scrubbing than a single wheel of the same total width. That matters when the cart has to turn in place under several tons. Single wheels are simpler and suit straight runs.

Sizing at this class

  1. Get the real weight, including fixtures and the heaviest load, and add margin for shock if loads are dropped or towed.
  2. Divide by one less than the number of casters on uneven floors [S2].
  3. Check the floor. Point loads this high can crack thin slabs and damage coatings; a wider tread spreads the load.
  4. Check the plate. Most here use 8-1/2 x 8-1/2 in; others use 5-1/4 x 7-1/4 and 5-1/2 x 7-1/2 in.

Extra heavy caster questions

What is the highest capacity caster here?

Hamilton dual wheel and large polyurethane and Nylast casters rated 40,000 lb per caster.

Should I use a dual wheel caster?

Use one when a very heavy load has to turn often. Two wheels on one axle swivel with less scrubbing than one wide wheel.

Which wheel is best for a concrete floor at these loads?

Polyurethane protects the floor and runs quieter. Nylast and steel roll with less effort but are harder on the slab.

Do these casters have brakes?

None of the listings on this page include a brake. Use floor locks or chocks to hold a load in place.
