All measurements indicate the wheel diameter by the tread width.
The below capacity ranges indicate the working (dynamic) load that each caster will support. A safety factor should be included in your formula to determine your required load rating per caster.
W/(C-1)=R W is total weight needed to move. C is total number of casters required. R is ideal load rating, with safety factor built in. Divide the total load weight by one less caster than you will use to safely determine load rating.
Plate dimensions shown are overall mounting plate size.
When replacing existing casters, select the closest plate size and verify bolt-hole compatibility.
BHP = Bolt Hole Pattern, shown under each plate.
Medium-light casters carry up to 1,500 lb per caster — the range that covers the equipment too heavy for light-duty casters but not yet in heavy-duty territory. Service carts, shop equipment, light machine bases, institutional and warehouse rigs: most of what rolls on a plant floor without being 'heavy industrial' lands here.

Hamilton's Medium-Light series covers service, shop, and lab and utility carts up to 1,500 lb per caster. The wheel drives the decision: Plastex phenolic for hard roll on smooth floors, soft rubber for quiet cushioned roll, and polyurethane for non-marking floor protection. Match the wheel to the floor and load.
| Config | Size | Capacity | Wheel | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plastex phenolic | 3" to 6" | up to 1,500 lb | Hard, low rolling resistance | Smooth concrete, highest capacity in the range |
| Polyurethane on core | 3" to 6" | up to 1,250 lb | Non-marking, floor-protecting | Finished floors, lab and clean utility carts |
| Soft rubber | 3" to 6" | up to 400 lb | Quiet, cushioned, shock-absorbing | Quiet roll, fragile loads, hospital and service |
| Hard rubber | 4" to 6" | up to 600 lb | Quiet with higher capacity than soft rubber | Service carts needing quiet roll plus more load |

Divide total cart and payload weight by the number of casters, then size to a caster rated at least 25% above that load. The series tops out at 1,500 lb per caster on the Plastex phenolic wheel. The margin covers the off-center loading these carts see, where one caster carries more than its even share.
Plastex phenolic gives the highest capacity and lowest rolling resistance on smooth concrete, but transmits shock and is not for finished floors. Polyurethane is non-marking, the choice for labs and clean carts on epoxy or tile. Soft rubber is the quietest and most cushioned for fragile loads, at the cost of capacity.
Top-plate mounts suit shop and service carts with a flat frame. Threaded-stem and grip-ring stems fit tube-frame utility and lab carts. Add side-lock or total-lock brakes where a cart must hold position at a bench, workstation, or bedside. Match the plate or stem to your existing cart for a direct retrofit.
This series is sized for the everyday service, shop, lab, hospital, and utility cart, not heavy plant transport. Choose polyurethane or rubber where quiet roll and floor protection matter, and phenolic where the floor is rough concrete. For loads above 1,500 lb, step up to the Heavy Duty Vanguard series.
Medium-light duty casters carry the everyday loads: service equipment, shop carts, and lab and utility carts. The series covers up to 1,500 lb per caster across phenolic, rubber, and polyurethane wheels, so you match the wheel to the floor and noise need.
Up to 1,500 lb per caster on the Plastex phenolic wheel. Polyurethane builds reach roughly 1,250 lb, and rubber builds are lower because the soft tread trades capacity for quiet roll. Call 844-439-4335 for the exact rating.
Polyurethane or soft rubber. Both are non-marking and quiet for occupied labs and patient areas. Polyurethane carries more load and protects finished floors; soft rubber is quietest for fragile loads. Avoid hard phenolic, which is noisy and can scuff floors.
Plastex phenolic is hard and durable, the highest capacity and lowest rolling resistance, best on smooth concrete but not finished floors. Polyurethane is non-marking for finished floors. Rubber is the quietest and most cushioned for fragile loads, at lower capacity.
Rubber wheels are the quietest and absorb floor shock, suiting hospital and service carts. Polyurethane is moderately quiet and non-marking. Phenolic is the loudest, since the hard tread transmits floor seams. For quiet roll, specify rubber or polyurethane.
Yes. Side-lock and total-lock brakes are available for carts that must hold position at a bench, workstation, or bedside. Total-lock brakes lock both the wheel and the swivel. Call 844-439-4335 and an engineer will spec the right brake.
