Choose Pneumatic Wheels If...
  • Your equipment runs outdoors on grass, gravel, asphalt, dirt paths, or any uneven ground
  • Your load is shock-sensitive — the air cushion absorbs impacts that hard wheels transmit directly to fragile cargo
  • You need to roll over obstacles like expansion joints, curbs, cracks, or surface debris without catching
  • Your terrain is soft or loose — turf, dirt, or sand where hard wheels dig in or track
  • Load per wheel is under 800 lbs and you need a quiet, cushioned ride at low to moderate speeds

What Size Hand Truck Wheel Do You Need?

Most hand truck wheels use 8-inch or 10-inch diameters with a centered bore for a 5/8-inch or 3/4-inch axle. 8-inch is standard on two-wheeled hand trucks; 10-inch is common on panel and appliance carts.

Diameter affects step-over height and rolling resistance. A larger wheel clears curbs and cracks more easily. Stick with 8-inch for tight stairwells; move to 10-inch when rolling over rough pavement or door thresholds.

What Load Can Hand Truck Wheels Support?

Standard hand truck wheels are rated 200 to 400 lbs per wheel — 400 to 800 lbs total for a two-wheel hand truck. Apply the 33% safety derate on four-wheel configurations.

Solid rubber wheels carry slightly more static load than pneumatic, with no risk of going flat under a parked load. Pneumatic absorbs shock on rough terrain. Rated capacity is per-caster at ideal conditions. For carts, apply a 33% safety derate.

Solid Rubber vs. Pneumatic Hand Truck Wheels — Which Is Right?

Solid rubber handles smooth warehouse floors and indoor environments where puncture resistance matters most. Pneumatic is better for gravel, asphalt, grass, and loading docks with gaps.

Solid rubber requires zero maintenance and will not flat-spot under static load. For routes that go outside — delivery, nurseries, construction — pneumatic absorbs vibration without bouncing the load.

How Do I Know If a Replacement Wheel Will Fit My Hand Truck?

Match three measurements: wheel diameter, bore diameter, and hub length. Most hand truck frames use a 5/8-inch or 3/4-inch solid axle. Hub length must fit between your frame legs without binding.

Measure between the inside faces of your frame legs — that is your required hub length. Too short and the wheel wobbles; too long and it will not seat. Our engineers can confirm fitment if you send the frame brand and model.

Can I Replace a Hand Truck Wheel Myself?

Yes. Replacing a hand truck wheel takes under five minutes: remove the axle nut, slide off the old wheel, slide on the new one, reinstall the nut.

Match bore size and hub length exactly. If the original wheel had a ball bearing insert, replace with a ball-bearing wheel — sleeve-bearing replacements wear faster. In-stock wheels ship same day.

Pneumatic Wheel Sizing Formula

Three steps: (1) Total cart weight ÷ number of casters × 1.5 safety factor = minimum per-caster rating. (2) Measure the tallest obstacle on your route — wheel diameter should be at least 3× that height for clean rollover. (3) Match axle bore: 3/4" for most 8"–12" pneumatic wheels, 1" for 16" heavy-duty models.

8"–10" Pneumatic Casters — Light to Medium Duty
Spec Value
Capacity Range 200–500 lbs per caster
Wheel Diameter 8" or 10"
Tire Width 2"–3"
Axle Bore 3/4"
Best For Garden carts, light outdoor equipment, event staging
What is the standard bore size for hand truck wheels?
Most hand truck wheels use a 5/8-inch bore. Some heavier-duty frames use 3/4-inch. Measure the axle diameter before ordering.
Are 8-inch and 10-inch the only sizes?
Those are the most common for standard two-wheel hand trucks. Panel carts may use 12-inch. Check frame leg spacing and axle diameter too.
12" Pneumatic Casters — Medium to Heavy Duty
Spec Value
Capacity Range 400–750 lbs per caster
Wheel Diameter 12"
Tire Width 3.5"–4"
Axle Bore 3/4" or 1"
Best For Equipment carts, loading dock transfers, agriculture, landscaping trailers
Ball bearing vs. sleeve bearing?
Ball bearing wheels roll more freely and last longer in frequent-use applications. Sleeve bearing cost less and work for occasional use. Replace ball bearing with ball bearing.
Can I use pneumatic wheels on a standard hand truck?
Yes, as long as axle diameter and hub length match. Pneumatic wheels run slightly wider, so confirm hub length clears the frame legs.
16" Pneumatic Casters — Heavy Duty Outdoor
Spec Value
Capacity Range 800–1,200 lbs per caster
Wheel Diameter 16"
Tire Width 4"–6"
Axle Bore 1"
Best For Heavy equipment transport, construction sites, rough outdoor terrain, towing carts
Do you sell in bulk?
Yes. Volume pricing on orders of 10 or more matching wheels. Contact our engineering team for bulk pricing and lead times.
What is the load capacity of a 10-inch hand truck wheel?
Typically 400 to 600 lbs per wheel depending on tread and bearing type. Apply a 33% derate for four-wheel cart configurations.
⚠ When NOT to Use Pneumatic Caster Wheels
  • Clean rooms or labs — tire debris and flat-spot risk contaminate controlled environments
  • Sustained static loads over 800 lbs — pneumatic tires flat-spot under prolonged stationary weight
  • Oil, solvent, or chemical exposure — rubber degrades; use polyurethane on chemical floors
  • High-temperature areas above 150°F — air pressure becomes uncontrolled and tires soften
  • Tight warehouse aisles — 12"+ wheels require significantly wider turning radius than 4"–6" wheels
