Nylon Caster Wheels

Nylon Caster Wheels — Lightweight, Chemical Resistant & High Load Rated

Nylon caster wheels handle heavy loads on smooth floors while resisting most chemicals, oils, and solvents. The hard, low-friction compound rolls easily under industrial loads and holds up to temperatures up to 250°F. Available in 2" to 8" diameters, rated 100 to 700 lbs per caster.

Why Choose Nylon Caster Wheels?
  • Handles heavy loads with low rolling resistance
  • Resists oils, solvents, and most chemicals
  • Temperature stable up to 250°F
  • Does not absorb moisture — will not swell or degrade
  • Non-marking on most floor surfaces
  • Excellent for machine shop and factory floors

What are nylon caster wheels best used for?

Nylon casters excel on smooth factory floors, machine shop environments, and anywhere chemical or oil exposure is present.

The low-friction surface and hard compound make nylon ideal for heavy-load carts that move constantly. Nylon does not absorb oils or solvents that would soften rubber wheels, making it the standard spec for metalworking, automotive, and chemical processing environments.

Are nylon caster wheels better than polyurethane for heavy loads?

At loads above 400 lbs per caster, nylon typically outperforms polyurethane in chemical resistance and temperature stability.

Polyurethane has better floor protection and shock absorption. Nylon wins on chemical resistance, temperature range, and load capacity. For dry, smooth factory floors with heavy loads and chemical exposure, nylon is the right choice.

What temperature can nylon caster wheels handle?

Standard nylon casters are rated to 250°F continuous service temperature.

This covers most factory environments, heated production floors, and proximity to ovens or heat sources at a safe distance. For temperatures above 250°F, specify high-temperature nylon or phenolic wheels, which handle 350°F to 550°F depending on compound.

Do nylon caster wheels mark floors?

Nylon is generally non-marking on most floor surfaces.

The off-white or gray compound does not leave rubber residue. On polished concrete or epoxy floors, nylon is commonly specified for its clean roll. For hospital or showroom use, verify with the specific floor manufacturer as very hard wheels can occasionally scuff soft finishes.

Nylon Wheel Load Rating Formula

Load per caster = total equipment weight ÷ number of casters × 1.25 safety factor. For high-cycle applications (constant movement all day), increase safety factor to 1.5 and specify precision roller bearings — plain bore bearings overheat and fail under continuous heavy load.

2"–4" Nylon Casters — Light to Medium Duty
Spec Value
Capacity Range 100–300 lbs per caster
Wheel Diameter 2", 3", or 4"
Wheel Width 3/4"–1.25"
Bearing Type Plain bore or roller
Best For Parts carts, tool carts, lab equipment
Can I use nylon casters in a machine shop?
Yes — nylon is the preferred material for machine shop carts. It resists cutting fluid, coolant, and light oils without swelling or degrading. Non-marking compound keeps floors clean.
Are 4" nylon casters suitable for heavy parts bins?
4" nylon casters handle up to 300 lbs each. For a 4-caster bin, that is a 900 lb practical limit (applying 33% safety derate). For heavier parts bins, step up to 5" or 6" wheels.
5"–6" Nylon Casters — Medium to Heavy Duty
Spec Value
Capacity Range 300–550 lbs per caster
Wheel Diameter 5" or 6"
Wheel Width 1.5"–2"
Bearing Type Precision roller recommended
Best For Industrial carts, die carts, chemical drums
What is the load rating for 6" nylon casters?
6" nylon casters are rated 400–550 lbs per caster with precision roller bearings. For a standard 4-caster cart, apply a 33% uneven load derate — practical cart capacity is approximately 1,100–1,475 lbs total.
Do nylon casters work on oily floors?
Yes. Nylon does not absorb oils and rolls on oil-contaminated surfaces better than rubber or polyurethane. However, oily floors reduce traction — consider adding a swivel lock if the cart needs to hold position on a slope.
8" Nylon Casters — Heavy Duty Industrial
Spec Value
Capacity Range 500–700 lbs per caster
Wheel Diameter 8"
Wheel Width 2"–2.5"
Bearing Type Tapered roller
Best For Heavy die carts, industrial equipment transport, chemical plants
What are 8" nylon casters used for?
8" nylon casters are specified for heavy industrial die transport, drum dollies, and equipment that must roll continuously on smooth factory floors under loads of 500–700 lbs per wheel. Tapered roller bearings are required at this load class.
Can 8" nylon casters handle chemical plant environments?
Yes — nylon resists most industrial chemicals including dilute acids, bases, and petroleum products. For aggressive chemical environments, verify against a full compatibility chart for your specific chemicals.
⚠ When NOT to Use Nylon Caster Wheels
  • Impact loads and rough surfaces — nylon cracks under repeated impact on rough concrete
  • Temperatures above 250°F — standard nylon softens; specify high-temp grade above this
  • Soft or noise-sensitive floors — nylon is hard and noisy on some surfaces
  • Cold storage below -40°F — standard nylon becomes brittle in extreme cold
