About Low Profile Casters

Low profile casters are clearance-sensitive caster assemblies with reduced overall height — typically 2-3/16" to 4-5/32" OAH — engineered for equipment where vertical space is constrained. CasterHQ stocks 53 configurations rated up to 800 lb per caster for vending machines, server racks, medical equipment, refrigeration systems, and OEM machinery builds.

Low Profile Caster Selection Guide

01What are low profile casters and when are they required?

Low profile casters are caster assemblies with overall heights (OAH) between 2-3/16" and 4-5/32", designed for equipment where clearance beneath the frame is limited. They're specified when standard 4" or 5" casters won't fit: vending machines, server racks, reach-in refrigerators, medical carts, dental chairs, under-desk mobility bases, and OEM machinery with tight base assemblies. Load capacity typically caps at 800 lb per caster because reducing wheel diameter reduces both load surface and bearing envelope.

02How do I measure the correct OAH for my equipment?

Measure from the mounting surface (underside of equipment frame or plate) to the floor, then subtract 1/8" clearance for finish variance. That number is your maximum OAH. For plate-mount casters, include the plate thickness in OAH (most plates are 3/16"). For stem-mount, measure inside the receiver bore and add stem-engagement depth. Example: if equipment clearance is 3-1/2" and you need 1/8" gap, specify OAH ≤ 3-3/8" — our 3" Series 03 hits 3-1/2" OAH, which is too tall; pick the 2" 01 Series instead.

03Which series fits my load and clearance?

01 Series (2" wheel, 2-3/16" OAH, up to 300 lb) — best for vending, retail fixtures, server carts. 03 Series (3" wheel, ~3-1/2" OAH, up to 500 lb) — best for medical equipment, refrigeration, heavy shop fixtures. 05 Series (3" wheel, up to 4-5/32" OAH, up to 800 lb per caster) — OEM machinery, transformer bases, heavy refrigeration. Dual-wheel total-locking (up to 180 lb/caster) — medical and office mobility bases where swivel-plus-wheel lock is required. Apply the N-1 load rule below to size correctly.

Full Specifications Overview+
  • OAH range: 2-3/16" (01 Series) to 4-5/32" (05 Series)
  • Wheel diameters: 2", 3", dual-wheel configurations
  • Load capacity: 180 to 800 lb per caster depending on series
  • Wheel materials: polyurethane, TPR, hard nylon depending on load/floor
  • Mount types: 2-1/2" × 3-5/8" plate, 7/16" × 1" threaded stem, 1-3/8" × 1" grip-ring stem
  • Bearings: precision ball (swivel), precision roller (wheel axle)
  • Brake options: side-lock on 01/03 Series, total-lock on 05 and dual-wheel
  • Finish: zinc-plated steel yoke standard, black or stainless available on request
Engineer Tips — Low Profile Selection+
  • Always measure floor-to-mount under load. Equipment settles 1/16" to 1/8" when loaded. Measuring empty gives a false OAH and you'll install a caster that drags on a carpet strip or dock plate.
  • Use total-lock brakes on OEM machinery. Side-lock only stops the wheel; total-lock stops both wheel and swivel rotation. Required for calibration equipment, CNC benches, and anything with an accuracy spec.
  • Don't exceed 85% of rated capacity. Low profile casters have smaller bearings and thinner yokes; static load at 85% of rating leaves 15% safety margin for dynamic impact (rolling onto a floor seam or threshold).
  • Polyurethane is the default wheel. Protects commercial flooring, resists chemical spills common in medical and food service, and rolls quieter than hard nylon under the same load.
  • Verify mount pattern BEFORE ordering. 2-1/2" × 3-5/8" is the industry standard for low profile plate, but legacy equipment may have 3" × 3" or 2-3/8" × 3-5/8" patterns. A plate template is available on request.
Frequently Asked Questions+

What is the shortest low profile caster you stock? The 01 Series 2" wheel in plate-mount measures 2-3/16" OAH — the shortest industrial-rated caster we stock.

Can I get low profile with a total-lock brake? Yes. Total-lock is available on the 05 Series (3" wheel, up to 800 lb) and on all dual-wheel configurations up to 180 lb per caster.

What mount pattern do your plate casters use? Standard is 2-1/2" × 3-5/8" with 5/16" bolt holes — matches most vending, refrigeration, and medical OEMs. Custom patterns available on 100+ unit orders.

Do you make custom low profile casters? Yes, on minimums of 100+ per configuration. Custom work typically adds 3-4 weeks lead time. Call 844-439-4335 for engineering review.

Are low profile casters stainless steel? Zinc-plated is standard; full 304 stainless is available on the 03 and 05 Series for clean room, food service, and marine applications.

Engineering Rule of Thumb
Load Rating Per Caster = (Total Equipment Weight ÷ 3) × 1.25 safety factor

Divide by 3, not 4, because uneven floors cause one caster to temporarily lift — redistributing the load to 3. Multiply by 1.25 for dynamic impact (rolling over dock plates, seams, thresholds). Example: a 1,200 lb vending machine needs casters rated ≥ 500 lb each (1,200 ÷ 3 × 1.25).

Our server cabinets had 3-3/8" clearance — no off-the-shelf caster fit. CasterHQ's 01 Series 2-3/16" OAH with total-lock solved it, and we retrofit 480 cabinets across four data centers. Zero chassis damage in 24 months of rolling on raised floor.

When NOT to Use Low Profile Casters
  • Loads over 800 lb per caster — spec standard 4" or 5" casters instead. Low profile bearings aren't built for that envelope.
  • Outdoor or rough surfaces — small wheel diameters bottom-out on dock plates, gravel, or wet concrete. Use pneumatic or 6"+ treaded wheels outdoors.
  • High-speed towing applications — low profile wheels overheat above 3 mph continuous. Pick standard cast iron or forged steel wheels for powered towing.
