About Polyurethane on Polyolefin Wheels

Polyurethane on polyolefin wheels bond a polyurethane tread to a polyolefin (high-density plastic) core — the lightest polyurethane wheel construction in our catalog. Best for light-duty applications (125–1,000 lb per wheel) where weight matters and chemical resistance is critical. Polyolefin core won't corrode in any chemical environment. Browse wheel sizes below then build a complete caster using our polyurethane caster yokes.

Polyurethane on Polyolefin Wheels Selection Guide

01Why poly-on-polyolefin vs solid polyurethane or aluminum?

Polyolefin core is 50% lighter than aluminum and 70% lighter than iron at the same wheel size — the lightest construction we stock. Trade-off is reduced load capacity and softer ride. Best for: medical equipment, mobile retail fixtures, food service trolleys, hospitality carts, and any application where total cart weight or quiet rolling matter more than max capacity. Cheaper than aluminum-core; comparable price to solid poly.

02How do I build a complete caster with poly-on-polyolefin wheels?

Pick a polyurethane caster yoke style: plate casters for institutional bolt-on, swivel casters, grip ring stem for office and institutional. Most poly-on-polyolefin wheels go into light-duty plate casters or office furniture configurations.

03Will the polyolefin core fail under load?

Polyolefin handles its rated load (up to 1,000 lb per wheel on the 8-inch sizes) without compression set or fatigue. Below rated load, expect 5+ year service life. Above rated load, the core can deform permanently — spec at 70% of rating for continuous heavy use, or upgrade to solid poly or aluminum for higher loads.

Full Specifications Overview+
  • Wheel core: high-density polyolefin (HDPE-based)
  • Polyurethane tread: 85A to 95A Shore A durometer
  • Wheel diameters: 3″, 3-1/2″, 4″, 5″, 6″, 8″
  • Wheel widths: 1″, 1-1/4″, 2″
  • Load range: 125 lb to 1,000 lb per wheel
  • Weight: 50% lighter than aluminum-core equivalent
  • Chemical resistance: excellent — polyolefin core is inert
  • Bearings: precision ball; sealed for clean room
Engineer Tips — Poly-on-Polyolefin Wheel Selection+
  • Spec for weight reduction first. Service carts, retail fixtures, mobile medical equipment — benefit from the 50% weight reduction over aluminum.
  • Match wheel size to load. 3-4″ for 125-300 lb · 5-6″ for 300-600 lb · 8″ for 600-1,000 lb per wheel.
  • Don't exceed 70% rated capacity for continuous use. Polyolefin core has lower fatigue resistance than metal cores under sustained load.
  • Excellent chemical resistance. Spec for cleaning compound exposure (food service, medical) where iron cores would corrode.
  • FDA-compliant tread + food-safe core. Polyolefin is inherently food-safe; spec FDA tread for direct food contact.
Frequently Asked Questions+

How long do poly-on-polyolefin wheels last? 3-5 years at 70% rated load on smooth floors. Polyolefin core wears slowly under typical commercial use.

Build a complete caster with these wheels? Yes — see /polyurethane-plate-casters or other configurations.

FDA-compliant for food service? Yes — polyolefin core is inherently food-safe; FDA-compliant tread formulations available.

Cost vs solid polyurethane? Comparable — typically 5-15% cheaper than solid poly at the same wheel size.

Will the wheel hold up to UV? Polyurethane tread is UV-resistant; polyolefin core handles UV well. Good for short-term outdoor use.

Engineering Rule of Thumb
Cart Load Rating Per Caster = (Total Cart Weight ÷ 3) × 1.25 safety factor

Apply this rule when sizing the caster that will use this wheel type. Divide total cart weight by 3 (not 4) because uneven floors cause one caster to temporarily lift, redistributing load to the remaining three. Multiply by 1.25 for dynamic impact (rolling onto floor seams, dock plates). Pick the wheel core type whose load range covers your per-caster requirement.

Polyurethane Wheel Core Comparison

Wheel Core Load/Wheel Weight Floor Protection Best Use
Polyurethane on Iron 700–8,000 lb Heaviest Excellent Heavy industrial, tow lines
Polyurethane on Aluminum 250–1,500 lb Light Excellent Aerospace, weight-sensitive
Solid Polyurethane 300–1,000 lb Medium Excellent General industrial, mid-load
Polyurethane on Polyolefin Most Popular 125–1,000 lb Lightest Excellent Light-duty, chemical resistance

When NOT to Use Polyurethane on Polyolefin Wheels
  • Loads above 1,000 lb per wheel — exceeds polyolefin core capacity. Use solid poly, aluminum, or iron.
  • Continuous heavy load above 70% rating — polyolefin core may fatigue. Spec at lower utilization or upgrade core type.
  • High-impact tow line duty — polyolefin not engineered for shock loads. Use poly-on-iron with kingpinless construction.
