10″ x 4″ Casters — Hamilton EPSD, Maxi-Duty, 18,000 lb Kingpinless, 84 Styles

The 10″ x 4″ size is super-heavy industrial spec. Hamilton dominates with the EPSD-104FVH forged steel rigid (10,000 lb), the Maxi-Duty polyurethane forged steel wheel (6,500 lb replacement), and the heaviest 10″ x 4″ forged steel kingpinless variant at 18,000 lb per caster — the maximum standard industrial capacity at this size. 84 styles for aircraft GSE, military transport, foundry direct, and the heaviest commercial fleet applications.

When does 10″ x 4″ replace 10″ x 3″?

Capacity primarily. The 10″ x 3″ tops at 7,000 lb dual-wheel; 10″ x 4″ reaches 18,000 lb single-wheel kingpinless. For applications above 7,000 lb per caster — aircraft tugs, military transport, foundry charging carts, large fleet transport — 10″ x 4″ is the spec. Also: the 4″ tread distributes load across a wider contact patch, reducing wheel deflection at the same capacity.

What plate dimensions for 10″ x 4″?

Almost exclusively the 4-1/2″ x 6-1/4″ heavy industrial plate or larger 6-1/8″ x 7-1/2″ super-heavy plate. The standard 4″ x 4-1/2″ medium plate isn’t structurally sufficient for the loads these casters carry — the bolt-through stress would exceed plate yield strength under continuous duty.

Kingpinless at 18,000 lb — what makes it possible?

The forged steel construction itself. At 10″ x 4″ size with forged-steel wheel core and integrated kingpinless raceway, the entire caster is essentially one continuous structural piece — no kingpin failure mode because there’s no kingpin. Hamilton publishes 18,000 lb as the rated static capacity at 3 mph rolling speed for the kingpinless variant. Caster Concepts manufactures comparable kingpinless variants in this size class as well.

How does the Maxi-Duty wheel differ from the EPSD wheel?

Maxi-Duty is Hamilton’s polyurethane-on-forged-steel wheel-only product line — sized for replacement of worn wheels on existing forged-steel yoke assemblies. EPSD is the complete caster assembly (yoke + wheel + bearings + top plate) sold as a finished unit. If your existing equipment has a Hamilton forged steel yoke but a worn poly tread, Maxi-Duty W-1040-DL is the direct replacement.

How does this ship?

10″ x 4″ casters ship LTL freight in nearly all cases due to weight — a single forged-steel kingpinless caster at this size weighs 75-100+ lb. Stock items at Mansfield, TX ship within 1 business day. Specialty configurations may have 5-7 day lead time. Freight quote at order placement.
