Why two brake systems?

Bagged ice carts are uniquely dangerous. The load is dense, wet, and shifts as the bags melt. A single foot brake holds the cart parked, but if the operator steps away on a grade the cart will start rolling once the bags settle. The dead-man brake engages whenever the operator releases the handle — the cart locks the moment you step away, every time, regardless of grade or load shift.

Operator note — Both brakes must be released to roll. New operators sometimes pull against the foot brake thinking the dead-man is stuck — check the foot brake first if the cart feels like it’s dragging.

Liner options

Standard 5012-002 ships without liner. Optional heavy-duty vinyl liner snaps into the three-sided tray for: (1) thermal insulation — reduces ice melt by ~20% on a 30-minute route, (2) traction — bags don’t slide on the vinyl during tilt-back, (3) spill containment if a bag splits inside the cart.

FAQs — B&P ice carts

Will the cart handle wet floors?Yes — no-flat non-marking wheels are specifically rated for wet tile and concrete. The dead-man brake stops slide on grade.
Stainless option available?Yes — the Liberator Ice Cart variant uses stainless steel surfaces for hotel and bar back-of-house deployment. Stainless adds about 8 lb to empty weight.
How many bags fit per shelf?20 standard 22-lb bags stack flat in the tilt-back tray (typically 4-5 bags wide, 4-5 layers tall depending on bag thickness).
Does it work on freight elevators?Yes — 64″ height clears all standard commercial elevator interiors. Use the foot brake before crossing the threshold gap.
Replacement liner or wheels available?Yes — the no-flat wheels match standard B&P caster bore. See B&P wheels for replacement.
