Tee nut or socket?

  • Tee nut: for threaded stems. The barrel goes into a drilled hole and the four prongs bite into the wood, giving the stem steel threads to screw into.
  • Grip neck socket: for smooth grip neck stems. The socket presses into a drilled wood leg and the stem snaps into it.
  • A threaded stem will not hold in a grip neck socket, and a grip neck stem will not hold in a tee nut.

Installing a tee nut

  1. Drill a hole the size of the tee nut barrel, square to the surface.
  2. Tap or press the tee nut in from the side the stem will enter, until the flange sits flat and the prongs are fully in.
  3. Thread the caster in by hand first. Check that the stem is not longer than the hole is deep.

For end grain in a leg, a tee nut is easiest to set before the leg is attached, or use a socket made for the leg.

Caster socket and tee nut questions

What size tee nut do I need?

The same size as the caster stem thread: 1/4, 5/16 or 3/8 in. Measure across the threads.

What is the Shepherd metal socket for?

A 5/16 in grip neck stem in a wood furniture leg. It is 1-1/2 in long.

Can I use a tee nut in metal?

Tee nuts are made for wood. For a metal tube, use a threaded insert or an expanding stem caster sized to the tube.

Do you have plastic grip ring sockets?

Not at the moment. Only zinc tee nuts and the Shepherd metal socket are listed.
