The below capacity ranges indicate the working (dynamic) load that each caster will support. A safety factor should be included in your formula to determine your required load rating per caster.
W/(C-1)=R W is total weight needed to move. C is total number of casters required. R is ideal load rating, with safety factor built in. Divide the total load weight by one less caster than you will use to safely determine load rating.

Caster wheels are the replaceable rolling component of a caster: the tread, hub, and bearing that carry the load, sold separately from the swivel or rigid frame. Diameters run 1-7/16" to 28" with per-wheel capacities from 80 lb to 7,600 lb. To size a replacement, match three specs from the worn wheel: diameter x width, bore size, and hub length, then pick the tread material for your floor. Need the complete assembly instead? Every industrial wheel material we stock, with the capacity range, best application, and trade-offs. Wheel material is the single most important spec on a caster — it determines load capacity, floor compatibility, noise level, and service life.

Total equipment + load weight divided by number of wheels = per-wheel requirement. Add 25 percent headroom for shock loads. A 4-wheel cart at 2,000 lb total needs at least 625 lb per wheel.
Smooth concrete and tile: polyurethane or hard rubber. Soft floors and noise-sensitive: TPR rubber. High temp: phenolic. Chemical/food contact: nylon. Heavy industrial: steel or cast iron. Outdoor rough: pneumatic.
Larger wheels roll easier over thresholds, dock seams, and uneven floors. Standard cart wheel: 3-5 inches. Heavy industrial: 6-8 inches. Outdoor: 10 inches or larger.
Solid wheels (no hub) cap around 800 lb. Aluminum hubs handle 1,200 lb. Iron and steel hubs handle 2,000-7,600 lb. Match the hub to your maximum load.

Measure the worn wheel, not the caster frame. Three measurements identify any replacement wheel:
Measure across the wheel face (diameter) and across the tread (width). Common industrial sizes: 3" x 1-1/4", 4" x 2", 5" x 2", 6" x 2", 8" x 2". Larger diameters roll easier and clear thresholds; wider treads carry more load.
The axle hole diameter: 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", or 1". Measure the existing axle bolt with calipers. A wrong bore will not seat on the axle.
Overall width at the wheel center, bearing face to bearing face. The hub must fill the frame's inside width or the wheel walks side to side on the axle and wears the bearing out early.

Engineer tip: If a polyurethane tread is separating from its iron core, check the load math before reordering the same wheel. Tread separation at under 70 percent of rated capacity almost always means shock loading from dock transitions, elevator lips, or drops. Step up to a harder durometer poly on iron, or switch to forged steel and solve it permanently.

Polyurethane, TPR rubber, nylon, and most polyolefin are non-marking on tile, vinyl, and polished concrete. Hard rubber, steel, and cast iron can leave marks on light-colored floors.

Remove the axle bolt and lock nut from the existing caster, slide the worn wheel off, install the new wheel onto the axle, reinstall the bolt and lock nut. Total time: 60-90 seconds with the right tools.
Common bore sizes: 3/8 inch, 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch, 3/4 inch, 1 inch. Measure the existing axle diameter or check the existing caster's spec. Wrong bore = wheel won't fit on the axle.
Most wheels include roller bearings or precision ball bearings pre-installed. Sealed bearings available for wet/dirty environments. Bearing type affects rolling resistance and load handling.

Any wheel fits any frame when three specs match: diameter and width clear the frame opening, the bore matches the axle diameter, and the hub length fills the frame's inside width. Most industrial frames accept several tread materials at the same size, so you can change material at replacement time without changing frames.
