ANSI ICWM-2026 Updates Caster Performance Tests — What Buyers Should Check

ANSI ICWM-2026 updates how industrial casters and wheels are tested. Here's what OEM and MRO buyers should verify on datasheets—edition year, category, and brake/static claims.

The Institute of Caster and Wheel Manufacturers' ANSI ICWM-2026 free performance-and-testing standard updates how industrial, institutional, bakery-rack, and specialty wheels are evaluated. For OEMs and maintenance buyers, the edition year and test category now matter as much as a vague "ICWM compliant" line on a datasheet.

Material Handling Industry (MHI) lists ANSI ICWM-2026, Vocabulary, Performance, and Testing Requirements for Casters and Wheels as a free download (catalog listing dated July 15, 2026 on MHI’s standards search). The standard is framed as a common basis for manufacturers, specifiers, and users to evaluate safety, durability, structural adequacy, and technical requirements across furniture, industrial (at/under and over 2.5 mph), institutional/medical, and business-machine and shopping-cart caster categories.

ICWM has also published a plain-language comparison of the 2018 and 2026 editions. The numeric deltas below are attributed to that ICWM comparison. Baseline “from” figures were spot-checked against an older ANSI ICWM text; the free ANSI ICWM-2026 PDF itself was not retrieved here (MHI store/portal login), so treat “to” acceptance criteria as association-attributed until confirmed in the PDF.

What ANSI ICWM-2026 is (and is not)

Per MHI’s listing, the document defines industry terms, tests, equipment/methods, test conditions, and minimum acceptance levels, and includes glossary content plus test equipment/procedures. It is industry standards language—not an OSHA mandate, and not automatic proof that any SKU on a website was retested to the 2026 edition.

What ICWM says changed from 2018

The following change summary is attributed to ICWM’s public 2018-vs-2026 comparison. Where noted, older-edition baselines match a prior ANSI ICWM text we reviewed; 2026 acceptance criteria remain pending PDF confirmation.

New and split application categories

  • Bakery rack / high-temperature environment casters called out as a category.
  • V-grooved wheels called out as a category.
  • Business machine and shopping cart treated as separated categories rather than a single blended bucket.

Document structure

Common test methods are grouped first, with acceptance criteria organized by category—useful when an RFQ cites a category and an edition year together.

Brake holding force

For tread compression brakes, ICWM’s comparison states acceptance moved from 7% to 10% of load capacity. An older ANSI ICWM text we reviewed lists tread-compression minimum brake holding force at 7% (hub 4%, positive locking 20%). The 10% 2026 criterion is association-attributed pending PDF confirmation. Practical implication: ask whether brake claims on a datasheet cite the 2026 criterion (or which edition’s criterion).

Impact and dynamic testing philosophy

ICWM states vertical impact requirements are no longer defined for Industrial or Institutional/Medical casters, with vertical dynamic testing preferred as more field-realistic; furniture remains an exception (furniture is often flipped onto casters after install). Do not compare “passed vertical impact” language across editions without checking which edition applies.

Static load tests (institutional / hospital bed)

  • Institutional: ICWM comparison cites a shift from 4× load for 1 minute to 2× load for 1 hour.
  • Hospital bed: from 4× for 1 minute to 3× for 1 hour.

Older ANSI ICWM text we reviewed uses 4× for 1 minute for industrial and institutional/medical static tests—matching the “from” side. The longer 2026 hold times are association-attributed pending PDF confirmation. Longer hold times change how “static overload” marketing language should be read.

Swivel play and brake/lock efficiency

ICWM notes swivel play reporting options that include linear measurements alongside angular ones, and that swivel-lock and wheel-brake efficiency procedures are separated in 2026, with an alternative method noted for swivel-lock efficiency. Older text we reviewed expresses swivel-play acceptance in angular degrees only.

Practical implications for OEM, MRO, and plant buyers

  • Prefer RFQs that cite ANSI ICWM-2026 (or the exact edition under which tests were run) and the product category.
  • For replacements, match mounting and duty first—see existing CasterHQ measure/replacement guides rather than treating “ICWM compliant” as a fitment shortcut.
  • For brake-equipped carts, ask for brake holding-force test reference versus the stated load rating.
  • For bakery/oven racks, look for bakery-rack / high-temp category language, not only generic “heat resistant” copy.
  • For V-groove track systems, confirm V-groove category coverage in the test claim.

How this relates to older “ICWM:2012 / 2018” catalog lines
