Platform Truck & Cart Comparison

Match deck material to your load, environment, and frequency of use.

Oak Wood Deck 2,000 lb 30″x60″ Manufacturing floors, packaging stations, dry warehouses CasterHQ USA-Made
Chrome Wire Shelf 1,200 lb 18″x36″ to 24″x48″ Stockrooms, retail back-of-house, healthcare Quantum

How to Choose

1. Deck Material by Environment

Aluminum diamond-plate: wet, oily, or chemical floors — corrosion-proof. Oak wood: dry manufacturing and packaging — absorbs shock, quiet, USA-made. Chrome wire: visibility for inventory, retail back-rooms, healthcare. Polymer/plastic: non-marking, quiet, food-service and janitorial. Match deck to what spills, scrapes, and impacts the cart will see.

2. Load Capacity

Most warehouse and manufacturing flatbeds need 2,000 lb capacity — the B&P aluminum and oak wood platforms hit this. Chrome wire and polymer carts run 550-1,200 lb for stockroom and service use. Studio and plastic service carts at 400-500 lb suit light loads. Always size 30% above expected peak load.

3. Deck Size

Standard widths: 16″, 18″, 24″, 30″, 36″. Lengths: 30″, 36″, 42″, 48″, 60″, 72″. Measure your typical load footprint plus 4-6″ clearance. For aisle navigation, keep total cart length under 60″ in tight warehouses. For staging areas with open floor, 72″ flatbeds carry full pallet loads in one trip.

4. Handle Style

Push handle: most common, ergonomic for sustained pushing. Removable handle: stacks and stores flat. Folding nose (studio cart): clears doorways and elevators. Yellow / red / orange handle on oak platform: high-visibility for shared-floor environments. Pick handle for the way the cart moves through your space.

Engineer Tip: Most platform truck failures trace to overloaded casters, not the deck. A 2,000 lb cart needs 4 casters rated 500 lb each minimum (preferably 600+ for shock loads). The deck won’t fail at 2,000 lb — the wheels will. Email info@casterhq.com with your load and floor conditions for a caster upgrade quote — we stock replacement wheel kits for every cart on this page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a platform truck and a flatbed cart?

Terminology varies by region. Platform truck typically refers to the heavy-duty 30″x60″ oak or aluminum deck on 8″ rubber wheels with a single push-handle — designed for moving pallets, machinery, and 2,000 lb loads. Flatbed cart is broader and includes the lower-deck aluminum diamond-plate version, chrome wire carts, and studio carts. Both move large items on a flat deck with 4 swivel-and-rigid casters.

What is the highest-capacity platform truck?

The 2,000 lb oak wood and B&P aluminum diamond-plate trucks on this page are the standard heavy-duty class. Higher-capacity custom carts (3,000-5,000 lb) are available on quote at info@casterhq.com or 844-439-4335 — they require reinforced caster mounts and 10″+ pneumatic or polyurethane wheels.

Are these carts made in the USA?

B&P aluminum flatbed carts: made in USA. Oak wood platform trucks: made in USA. Quantum chrome wire and polymer carts: made offshore. B&P studio carts: made in USA. PSC plastic service carts: imported. For domestic-required orders (federal, defense, GSA), specify B&P, oak, or USA-only at checkout.

What wheel size comes on platform trucks?

Standard configurations: 8″ pneumatic or rubber wheels on 2,000 lb oak/aluminum platforms (for shock absorption and threshold roll-over), 5-6″ polyurethane or rubber on 1,200-1,400 lb flatbeds, 4-5″ on chrome wire and polymer carts. Larger wheels lower push-force; smaller wheels lower deck height.

Can I replace the casters on these carts?

Yes — every cart on this page uses standard caster mounting plates (typically 4″ x 4-1/2″ or 2-3/8″ x 3-5/8″). Photograph the existing caster mount and email info@casterhq.com for cross-reference. We stock replacement casters for every cart we sell.

What is a folding-nose studio cart?

The B&P SC-30DD has a 30″ nose that folds vertically against the cart body for clearance through standard 32″ doorways and elevators. Standard configuration is double-deck (two shelves) for AV equipment, lights, and rigging. Specified by film, photo, and broadcast studios where doorway clearance is the limiting factor.

Do platform trucks have brakes?

Standard 4-caster platform trucks ship with 2 rigid rear + 2 swivel front (no brakes). Brake options: floor lock (foot-pedal beam that drops between casters), total-lock swivel casters (replaces 1 or 2 swivels), or wheel brakes on rigid casters. Spec brake style at order — floor lock is most common for parked-cart applications.
