Cart wheels and total lock casters for utility, platform and housekeeping carts. 3 to 8 inch plate casters in polyurethane, rubber, phenolic, nylon, polyolefin and semi-steel, most with a total lock brake that holds both the wheel and the swivel. Cart casters are the replaceable swivel and rigid casters fitted to utility carts, platform trucks, and housekeeping carts. Wheel sizes run 3" to 10" with per-caster capacities from 225 to 1,100 lb, up to 4,400 lb for a 4-caster set. The two standard mount plates, 2-3/8" x 3-5/8" and 4" x 4-1/2", cover most commercial carts, so match the plate bolt pattern before anything else.

Service carts and small utility carts (under 24" deck): 3-inch wheels. Standard industrial and commercial platform carts: 4-inch or 5-inch wheels. Heavy manufacturing platforms, large platform trucks, and tilt trucks: 5x2" or larger. Hotel housekeeping carts and high-clearance equipment: 8-inch wheels. Smaller wheels turn easier and fit tight space, larger wheels handle bumps and uneven floors better.
Default for retail and warehouse floors: polyurethane (300 to 1,100 lb depending on size and hub). For dish rooms and carts that see heat: phenolic (350 lb, rated -50 to 250°F) or semi-steel (350 lb, rated to 600°F). For hospitals, food prep and tile or vinyl floors: thermo rubber or hard rubber (225 to 600 lb, quieter and gentler on the floor). For easy rolling on smooth concrete: nylon or polyolefin. Match the material to where the cart actually lives.
If you are replacing wheels on a Rubbermaid tilt truck, a Lavex housekeeping cart or other branded cart, order the matching replacement listed here. For universal cart frames, match by plate size: most commercial carts use the 2-3/8" x 3-5/8" top plate, while heavier carts use the 4" x 4-1/2" plate. Measure the existing plate and bolt holes before ordering, since a bolt pattern mismatch is the usual reason a replacement does not fit.
Carts that need to stay put while loading or unloading do best on total lock casters, which lock the wheel and the swivel at the same time. Service carts, AV carts, prep tables, lab carts and housekeeping carts all qualify. Carts that move most of the day may not need total lock at every corner. Two total lock swivels and two rigids give straight tracking and still lock in place.

Most use a 2-3/8 x 3-5/8 in plate with bolt holes 1-3/4 x 2-7/8 in apart. The 5 x 2 in and 8 x 2 in casters use a 4 x 4-1/2 in plate.
Polyurethane and rubber are the most common here and both run quietly on finished floors. Phenolic is hard and suits heavy loads on dry floors; nylon and polyolefin roll easily on smooth concrete.

Divide the loaded cart weight by three. A cart that weighs 900 lb loaded needs casters rated at least 300 lb each.
