What fails on drywall carts
Jobsite debris, thresholds, gravel, and shock loads beat furniture casters every time.
Spec checklist before you order
Measure the failed unit (or one good corner). Tape + calipers if you have them.
- Wheel diameter — e.g. 8″; wrong Ø changes roll resistance and deck height
- Tread width — e.g. 2″; affects capacity and hub/axle fit
- Overall height (OAH) — floor to top of plate/stem; mixing OAHs tilts the cart
- Mount type — top plate vs stem; wrong mount = no install
- Plate size & BHP — e.g. 4″ × 4-1/2″; 2-5/8″ × 3-5/8″ slotted to 3″ × 3″
- Swivel vs rigid — per corner; typical cart: 2 swivel + 2 rigid
- Brake — yes/no; side lock vs total lock for slopes / parked loads
- Load per caster — total loaded cart ÷ casters × safety factor
- Axle / bore (wheel-only) — diameter + hub length
- Floor / environment — concrete, gravel, finished floors — TPR vs harder poly/nylon
8″ is common — not universal. CasterHQ stocks 8″ × 2″ TPR for this application. Other diameters exist. Measure first.
Wheel only vs full caster
Pick the fix that matches what’s actually broken.
- Prefer wheel only — tread worn/flat, fork & swivel still true. Lower cost; or buy the set of 4 for even height.
- Prefer full caster — swivel seized, fork bent, plate cracked, stem bent. A wheel swap will not restore steering or structure.
- Prefer matched set — mixed heights after a partial rebuild. Same Ø, width, OAH so the cart sits level.
- Prefer RFQ + photos — fleet / Net30 / unknown OEM dims. Spec before you buy.
Drywall cart caster: complete swivel or rigid unit (rig + wheel).
Wheel-only: tread/core + bearings (and axle/hardware when the kit includes them) when the fork and mount remain serviceable.
Matched sets vs mixing brands
Recommended: replace as a matched set of four (same diameter, width, OAH, and tread) so the cart sits level and rolls evenly.
Risk of mixing: different OAH or tread hardness causes lean, uneven load, and premature failure on the “good” corners.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size caster does a drywall cart use?
Measure wheel diameter, tread width, overall height, and mount. Many drywall / sheetrock carts use 8″ × 2″ TPR wheels or plate casters (CasterHQ stocks that size at 700 lb per wheel/caster), but 8″ is not universal. Confirm bolt pattern and load for your cart.
Should I replace the wheel or the whole caster?
Replace the wheel if the fork, swivel raceway, and axle are true. Replace the whole caster if the swivel is seized, the fork is bent, or the plate/stem is damaged.
Do I need a matched set of four?
Yes, recommended. Matched diameter, width, and OAH keep the cart level and load even. Mixing heights is a common fit risk.
Can I buy replacements without knowing the cart brand?
Yes — if dimensions and load match. Brand alone is not enough. Send photos and measurements to info@casterhq.com for a fitment check. We do not sell “Exact fit” brand claims without measured or manufacturer-documented evidence.
Why do drywall cart wheels go flat or chunk?
Soft TPR treads absorb jobsite shock but can flat-spot under long static loads or chunk on debris. Matching capacity and replacing as a set reduces uneven wear.
