Parking-lot grit, thresholds, overloaded baskets, and dragged locked wheels beat the running gear every day.
Spec checklist before you order
Measure the failed unit (or one good corner). Tape + calipers if you have them. Per the live shopping-cart hub fitment guidance, the common U.S. retail standard (many North American carts ~2000 onward) is:
- Wheel diameter — commonly 5″ (confirm diameter — some compact utility carts use 4″)
- Tread width — commonly 1¼″
- Threaded stem — ½-13 × ⅞″ on complete swivel casters (measure older / imported / European carts first)
- Bearing / axle bore — 5/16″
- Axle length (wheel-only) — hub + common 5/16″ × 2¼″ axle & lock nut when replacing hardware
- Swivel vs rigid corners — typical retail cart: 2 swivel front + 2 rigid rear (some warehouse / club carts use 4-wheel swivel — match what you have)
- Wheel material vs floor — polyurethane for tile/concrete; TPR / soft rubber for quieter / softer floors (lower capacity on rubber SKUs — confirm on PDP)
- Load — confirm dynamic capacity on the product page; do not mix unverified ratings across corners
Measure first: hub length, stem, and axle
Most replacement mistakes happen when someone orders a “5 inch shopping cart wheel” by diameter alone. Diameter gets you in the ballpark — hub length, stem, and axle decide whether the wheel actually mounts.
- Hub length (overall width through the hub) — Measure the face-to-face hub length on the old wheel. A wheel that is too narrow floats on the axle; too wide will not seat in the fork. Match the hub length before you care about tread color.
- Stem type & thread — On complete swivel casters, the common U.S. retail stem is ½-13 × ⅞″. Confirm thread pitch and exposed length. A stem that bottoms out before the nut snugs will back out under load.
- Axle & nut (wheel-only path) — Wheel-only replacements commonly reuse a 5/16″ bore with a 5/16″ × 2¼″ axle and lock nut. If the axle is bent, rounded, or missing, order grocery-cart axle/nut hardware with the wheel — do not reuse damaged hardware.
- Photo the fork and stem — One phone photo of the old wheel in the fork (and of the stem if you are swapping the full caster) speeds Net30 / fleet RFQs.
Wheel only vs complete swivel caster
Pick the fix that matches what is actually broken.
Caster = complete unit (wheel + frame + threaded stem). Wheel = rolling part (tread + bearings); no frame.

“Grocery cart parts” searches usually mean the hardware that holds the wheel in the fork — not a second vertical. When you replace a wheel-only, also check:
- Axle — straight, correct diameter (commonly 5/16″), correct length for the hub + fork cheeks.
- Lock nut / hardware — threads not stripped; nylon-insert or lock style that stays tight under vibration.
- Washer / spacer — if the original build used spacers to center the hub, match that stack so the wheel does not walk.

Polyurethane vs TPR / soft rubber
- Polyurethane — default for retail tile and warehouse concrete; higher capacity on poly configurations on the hub table.
- TPR / soft rubber — quieter / softer floors; lower dynamic capacity on hub rubber rows; faster wear in hard parking-lot duty.
- Polyolefin — tougher fleet option in larger bulk packs on the hub.
Choose for floor + noise + load — not store brand name. Confirm capacity on the PDP.
“Universal” means common-spec — not magic. Do not assume drop-in if stem diameter/pitch/length differs; wheel Ø or tread width differs; bearing bore is not 5/16″; swivel/rigid layout does not match; or load/floor duty exceeds the PDP rating.
