Spin the wheel and rock the fork. If the tread is worn flat or chunked but the fork still swivels smoothly with no play, replace the wheel only. If the swivel grinds, wobbles, or the fork is bent, replace the complete swivel caster. Rear positions on most carts are rigid forks, so they almost always take a wheel-only replacement.
Four. Two front swivel positions and two rear rigid positions. Front swivel casters take the curb hits and the turning load, so they usually wear first. Order by position count, not cart count: a 100-cart fleet is 400 wheel positions.
A single store re-wheeling a 100-cart fleet needs 400 wheels for a full swap, or roughly 200 for fronts only. Polyurethane (including TPU) is the retail standard: non-marking, quiet on sealed concrete and tile, and the longest wearing. Soft rubber and TPR treads are quieter and softer over expansion joints and rough asphalt, at the cost of faster wear. Either tread on the 5″ × 1-1/4″ wheel with a 5/16″ bore fits the same axle.
