Gate Wheels and Spring-Loaded Gate Casters

Diameter: 3 to 10 inSpring-loaded: 110 to 1,000 lbV-groove: 350 to 16,000 lb
Gate wheels come in two kinds, and both are on this page. Spring-loaded gate casters, 3 to 8 in, bolt under the free end of a swing gate and are rated 110 to 1,000 lb each in rubber, gray TPR, solid polyurethane or iron. V-groove wheels and rigid casters ride an inverted angle-iron track under a sliding gate, from 350 lb cast iron wheels to Hamilton forged steel casters. Measure the gate weight at the wheel end first.

The spring lets the wheel follow small dips and bumps while it holds up the free end of the gate, so the hinges and post carry less of the weight. Size the caster by the weight at the wheel end, not the whole gate.

A V-groove wheel needs a matching inverted angle track. Match the groove angle and width to the track before ordering. Wheels without a rig bolt into your own bracket. For more track wheels see V-track sliding gate wheels.

Outdoor notes

  • Solid polyurethane and rubber treads are quieter than iron and easier on concrete and pavers.
  • Iron and ductile wheels are the choice on steel track and for heavy sliding gates.
  • Most rigs here are zinc-plated or powder-coated steel. Hamilton also has stainless steel models for wet or coastal sites [S1].

Gate caster questions

How does a spring-loaded gate caster help a sagging gate?

It bolts under the free end of the gate. The wheel holds up that end and the spring lets it follow uneven ground, so the hinges and post carry less weight.

How much weight can a gate caster hold?

Spring-loaded gate casters here are rated 110 to 1,000 lb each. V-groove wheels for sliding gates run from 350 lb up to Hamilton forged steel casters rated in the thousands of pounds.

What is a V-groove gate wheel?

A wheel with a V-shaped groove that rides on an inverted angle-iron track, used on sliding gates.

Which gate wheel is best on a concrete driveway?

A spring-loaded caster with a solid polyurethane or rubber tread. Iron wheels are better on steel track.
