How to Choose

1. Match Capacity to Hot Tub Weight

Most residential 4-6 person hot tubs weigh 700-900 lb dry, 3,500-4,500 lb full. Move EMPTY. Dolly capacity should exceed empty hot tub weight by 30%. 1,000 lb dolly handles most spas; 1,400 lb dolly handles oversized swim-spa or commercial units.

2. Outdoor vs Indoor Terrain

Driveway, lawn, gravel: 8" or 10" pneumatic. Finished basement floors, polished concrete, hardwood: 3.5"-5" non-marking thermo rubber. Mixed indoor/outdoor: pick based on the rougher surface — you can roll pneumatic on smooth concrete fine.

3. Deck Size & Bracing

50" x 28" decks handle most rectangular spas and large round hot tubs. 40" x 18" decks suit smaller spas and tight access points (basement doors, hallways). Always center-load the hot tub and use ratchet straps to prevent tip-over during the move.

4. Strap Slot Models

GlidePro StrapMate models have a slot through the deck for ratchet straps that bind the hot tub to the dolly. Critical on outdoor moves over uneven terrain — without straps, the hot tub can shift and roll the dolly. Indoor flat-floor moves are safe without straps.

Engineer Tip: Drain the hot tub completely before moving. A 4-person hot tub holds 350-450 gallons of water — that's 2,900-3,700 lb of water alone, before the spa shell weight. Full hot tub move = 4,500 lb total, which exceeds every consumer-grade dolly. Empty + strap-secured = 800-1,000 lb total, which fits within a 1,000-1,400 lb dolly capacity with safety margin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the weight capacity of a hot tub dolly?

Our RoverMax line covers 1,000 to 1,400 lb. Always move an EMPTY hot tub. A drained 4-person hot tub weighs 700-900 lb — well within 1,000 lb dolly capacity. A drained 6-8 person or swim-spa can weigh 1,000-1,300 lb — specify the 1,400 lb dolly for those.

Can I move a hot tub with water in it?

No — do not attempt. A full residential hot tub weighs 3,500-4,500 lb. That exceeds every consumer dolly and most commercial moving equipment. Drain completely before moving. The drain plug is usually at the lowest point on the spa shell.

What size wheels do I need for outdoor moves?

10" pneumatic for gravel, lawn, dock plates, rough driveways. 8" pneumatic for paved driveways and smooth outdoor surfaces. Non-marking thermo rubber wheels are NOT recommended outdoors — they grip loose surfaces poorly and pick up debris.

What is the StrapMate slot for?

A through-deck slot that lets you run ratchet straps under the hot tub and back up over the top, binding the hot tub securely to the dolly. Required on outdoor moves where the dolly may tip or roll on uneven terrain. Indoor flat-floor moves can be done without straps if the hot tub is centered.

Are these dollies made in the USA?

Yes — the RoverMax line is U.S.-manufactured (solid oak from American hardwood, wheels and hardware assembled in the USA). The premium 50x28 oak dolly is also USA-made. International-shipped knock-offs are common — specify USA-made for full warranty and load rating compliance.

Can I move other heavy objects with these dollies?

Yes — oak deck dollies move pianos, safes, gun safes, generators, washing machines, and any heavy concentrated load up to the dolly's capacity. The strap slot models work for tall narrow loads (gun safes) that need to be secured.

Do hot tub dollies fit through standard doorways?

The 40" x 18" GlidePro fits through any 30"+ doorway. The 50" x 28" oak dollies require a 32"+ doorway, and the hot tub must be tilted edge-up to fit through — plan the move path before lifting onto the dolly.

Can I rent vs buy?

For a one-time move, local rental yards stock similar dollies for $40-80/day. For installers, spa retailers, and property managers who move multiple spas per year, owning a RoverMax pays back in 3-5 moves. We sell — we don't rent.
