Brakes and layouts

  • 2 swivel with brake + 2 rigid: the most common tool box layout. Steer from the handle end, lock it where you work.
  • 4 swivel, 2 with brakes: turns in its own length in a tight bay.
  • Total lock: the red poly on iron and orange poly on aluminum sets lock both the wheel and the swivel, so a loaded box will not creep when you pull on a wrench.
  • Side lock and front lock: on many of the light sets; these stop the wheel only.

Picking a tread for the shop floor

  • Polyurethane on iron or aluminum: the high-capacity choice for big roll cabinets. Quiet and non-marking.
  • Phenolic: rolls easily, resists oil and grease, and is listed -50 to 250°F. Loud on rough concrete [S2].
  • Semi-steel: listed to 600°F, for welding carts and hot areas. Hard on finished floors.
  • Gray TPR: the quietest and softest, for light boxes and carts on finished floors.
  • Polyolefin: light, rust-free and low cost.

Weigh or estimate the loaded box and divide by three to get the load per caster, since one corner often lifts on an uneven floor [S3]. Some sets with blue solid polyurethane wheels have stainless steel rigs [S1].

Tool box caster questions

What size casters does a tool box use?

It depends on the box. Smaller boxes and carts often use 3 to 5 x 1-1/4 in casters on a 2-3/8 x 3-5/8 in plate. Large roll cabinets often use 4 to 8 x 2 in casters on a 4 x 4-1/2 in plate. Measure your plate and bolt holes before ordering.

How much weight can a tool box caster set hold?

From 800 lb for small TPR sets to 5,000 lb for 6 and 8 in polyurethane and phenolic sets.

What is a total lock caster?

A caster whose brake locks the wheel and the swivel together, so the box cannot roll or turn.

Which wheel is best on a shop floor?

Polyurethane for heavy boxes and quiet rolling, phenolic for oil and heat, semi-steel for welding areas.
