What Are Furniture Casters and When Should You Use Them?

Furniture casters are light-duty wheels — typically 2″ and rated 75 to 375 lb — that mount to furniture on a grip-ring stem or plate so a cabinet, table, cart, or display fixture rolls without marking the floor. Use them any time a piece needs to move for cleaning, rearranging, or merchandising.

Pick a non-marking tread (soft rubber, TPR, or polyurethane) for finished floors, and add a brake where the piece must stay put once positioned.

How Much Weight Can Furniture Casters Hold?

CasterHQ furniture casters carry 75 to 375 lb per caster. A four-caster piece therefore supports several hundred pounds, but size by load per caster and apply a 33% derate for uneven floors — on four casters, only three reliably share the load at once. For heavier cabinets and equipment, step up to low profile or plate-mount casters.

What Are the Best Casters for Different Furniture?

Match the caster to the piece and the floor:

Which Furniture Caster Stem or Mount Do I Need?

Most furniture casters use a 7/16″ grip-ring (grip-neck) stem that presses into a socket — the most common furniture and chair fitment in the U.S. Measure the socket bore and depth, or the stem on your old caster, before ordering. Threaded-stem and plate-mount options are available when the piece uses them.

Twin-Wheel vs Ball vs Single-Wheel Furniture Casters?

Single-wheel casters roll easiest; twin-wheel and ball casters trade a little roll for looks and stability. Decorative twin-wheel casters suit visible furniture and display pieces; spherical ball casters give a clean retro look and swivel in any direction. All three come in non-marking treads for finished floors.

From Our Engineers

The furniture-caster mistake we see most is stem mismatch. People buy on wheel look and forget the 7/16″ grip-ring socket — measure the bore and depth first. And on finished hardwood, always specify a non-marking tread.

Furniture Casters FAQ

What is the most common furniture caster stem size?
A 7/16-inch grip-ring (grip-neck) stem fits the large majority of U.S. furniture and chairs. Measure the socket or old stem to confirm.
Will furniture casters mark hardwood floors?
Soft rubber, TPR, and polyurethane treads are non-marking on clean finished floors. Avoid black hard treads on light hardwood.
What is the difference between furniture casters and chair casters?
Furniture casters cover cabinets, tables, carts, and display fixtures. Chair casters are the office and desk chair replacement wheels on our chair casters page.
