Choose air-filled for the most cushion or foam-filled for no flats: CasterHQ air casters carry 250 lb at 8 in and 350 lb at 10 in, foam-filled models 250 to 300 lb. Hamilton single and dual pneumatic casters cover the heavy end, from 330 lb at 8 in up to 7,700 lb. Rig-only listings let you fit your own tire. Hamilton two-tire models are also grouped on the dual wheel pneumatic casters page.

Product fields [S1].

The Ever-Roll 10 x 3 in foam casters are listed at 300 lb for the swivel and 280 lb for the rigid [S1]. Hamilton's tires step up in ply as they get bigger: 4-ply at 8 to 12 in, 6-ply on the 16 in 70166, 8-ply at 18 in and 10-ply at 21 and 25 in [S2].

Air or foam, by job

  • Delicate loads such as electronics, glass and liquids: air. Hamilton notes that lowering pressure adds cushion for lighter loads, while full pressure gives full capacity and the easiest roll [S2].
  • Construction, demolition, scrap and recycling: foam-filled. A nail can't flatten it.
  • Equipment that sits for months: foam-filled, so it isn't flat when you need to move it.
  • Over 350 lb per caster: Hamilton singles from 480 lb at 10 in, or duals.

Limits of a rubber tire

Hamilton rates its pneumatic tires -30 to 120°F, with low abrasion and chemical resistance [S3]. Keep them away from heat, solvents and fuel spills. Air casters lean slightly under side loads, so a tall cart feels softer on turns than it does on hard wheels.

Choosing

  1. Load per caster: total weight divided by one fewer than the caster count [S4].
  2. Height: an 8 in pneumatic caster raises a cart far more than a 5 in hard-wheel caster. Check the overall height on the listing.
  3. Plate: CasterHQ models share the 4 x 4-1/2 in plate. Hamilton plates grow with size.
  4. Brakes: CasterHQ 8 and 10 in swivels come with a side lock brake option. The Hamilton models on this page have no brake.

Pneumatic caster questions
