Fabrication and welding shops do not buy “a heavy duty caster.” They buy a mount path and a duty path. Weld-on pad vs bolt-on plate, V-groove track vs open floor, kingpinless shock duty vs standard swivel, floor lock vs hoping the brake holds — diagnose those before you shop SKUs. Search “welding table casters” and you will see whole tables for sale. That is not the same as replacement casters for a shop build.

What fails in fabrication & welding shops
Torn or cracked top plate / stripped bolt holes
Repeated impact ovalizes holes. Path: measure plate and pattern; consider a weld-on pad / shim so the frame gets a permanent dock and the caster stays replaceable.
Seized or broken kingpin swivel
Standard kingpins take side load and shock poorly on uneven fab floors. Path: kingpinless / kingpinless-casters after confirming capacity on the product page.
Flat-spotted soft tread on steel debris
Polyurethane chunks on slag and scale. Path: metal / semi-steel builds on the fab hub or metal wheels when floors are abusive — confirm on PDP.
Drift on grade / brake fade while welding
Swivel brakes alone are not a floor lock. Path: floor truck locks matched to wheel height.
Off-track V-groove
Wrong groove for angle iron binds or climbs. Path: V-groove / track hubs — confirm groove and capacity on the product page; do not invent track OEM fit.
Spec checklist before you order
- Mount type — weld-on pad/shim vs bolt-on top plate
- Plate size + bolt-hole pattern — center-to-center both axes; note slotted holes. Common titles include 4″ × 4-1/2″ and 4-1/2″ × 6-1/4″ — measure yours
- Load per caster — total loaded weight ÷ corners, with margin; confirm dynamic capacity on PDP
- Wheel Ø × tread width
- Swivel vs rigid layout
- Floor condition — smooth, debris/slag, docks
- Track / V-groove?
- Shock / tow duty? — kingpinless if kingpins fail today

V-groove & track (measure first)
Guided travel on inverted angle or flat bar is a different job than open fab floor. Measure the track first — then pick V-groove wheels or complete V-groove casters. Open floor with debris stays on metal / semi-steel via the fab hub or metal wheels.
Track / rail measure checklist
- Rail / track profile — inverted angle, flat bar, or formed track? Measure the running surface width and the apex (or bar thickness) the groove must seat on.
- Groove match — the V-groove included angle and depth must seat on that rail without climbing the flange or bottoming out. Off-match is the usual cause of “off-track V-groove” failures.
- Capacity — rate for the heaviest corner load with margin. Confirm dynamic capacity on the PDP; do not mix unverified ratings across corners.
- Mount — wheel-only (rebuild an existing fork) vs complete V-groove caster (new plate or weld-on path). Measure bolt pattern or pad before you order.
V-groove wheels vs complete casters
V-groove wheels replace the rolling element when the fork/swivel is still true. V-groove casters are the complete unit (wheel + yoke + mount) when you need a drop-in plate or weld-on assembly. Shop:
- V-groove wheels — all types
- Track wheels — all types
- V-grooved caster wheels (capacity up to 16,000 lb)
- V-grooved track casters (Hamilton W-V Series path)

The V-grooved track casters hub references Hamilton W-V Series capacity ranges in the 325 to 10,000 lb band on many SKUs, with higher wheel capacity available on forged V-groove wheels — always confirm the SKU on the product page.
V-groove bearing vs roller (shop-floor pick)
Search traffic often lands on v groove bearing, v groove roller, and v groove roller bearing. On the shop floor those phrases usually mean the bearing style inside the V-groove wheel — not a separate product family.
- Precision / ball bearing (v groove bearing language) — smoother roll, better for frequent travel and cleaner track. Confirm lube and seal for your dust/spark environment.
- Roller bearing (v groove roller / v groove roller bearing language) — higher load support under heavy static and slow traverse; common on high-capacity forged V-groove builds. Confirm bore and axle match.
- Plain / sleeve — simple and rugged on some metal wheels; higher push force. Only when the PDP and duty call for it.
Welding cart wheels
Welding carts and cylinder carts are open-floor mobility — not V-groove track. Size the wheel for debris, threshold, and cylinder/cart load; then decide weld-on pad vs bolt-on plate for the mount.
- Wheel size — larger diameter clears shop debris and thresholds better; confirm overall height so the cart does not tip the load geometry.
- Duty — metal / semi-steel for spark and scrap floors; soft tread only where floor finish matters and capacity still clears.
- Mount — weld-on pad or shim for permanent frames; bolt-on plate when you want to swap later. See caster shims & weld plates and the fab hub.

Kingpinless vs standard swivel
Repeated kingpin failure, impact, or tow shock → compare kingpinless / kingpinless-casters. Confirm capacity and dimensions on the product page before ordering.
Floor lock vs swivel brake
Stabilize table/cart for weld/grind → dedicated floor truck lock sized to wheel height. Measure overall height so the lock engages.

How do I measure V-groove track for casters?
Measure the rail profile (inverted angle or flat bar), running surface width, and apex/thickness the groove must seat on. Then match groove angle/depth, capacity, and mount (wheel-only vs complete caster). See the V-groove & track section above.

Those searches usually mean the bearing style inside the V-groove wheel. Are floor locks required?
If the table must not creep during weld/grind, a dedicated floor truck lock is safer than relying on a swivel brake alone. Match lock height to the wheel.
Can I use shopping-cart wheels on a fab table?

Is this the same as powder-coating oven casters?
No. Heat / powder-oven continuous °F is a different Application Guide and heat-casters hub. Keep them separated.
