Twelve 6 x 2 in casters and wheels for trash and recycling containers, all from CasterHQ. Casters come in phenolic (1,250 lb), green polyurethane on iron (1,200 lb), polyolefin (700 lb) and mold-on rubber (550 lb), swivel or rigid on a 4 x 4-1/2 in plate. Matching wheels are sold on their own for rebuilding a caster. None has a brake.

Picking a tread for a dumpster or bin

Heavy bins on concrete: phenolic or polyurethane on iron carry the most, 1,200 to 1,250 lb per caster.
Washdown and wet areas: polyolefin is a one-piece plastic wheel with no iron center to rust.
Rolling over pavement and thresholds: mold-on rubber gives the softest ride, at 550 lb per caster.
Hot surfaces: phenolic lists the widest range, to 250°F.

How to size a set

Weigh the full container. Divide by three for a four-caster bin, since one caster is often off the ground on uneven pavement [S2].
Measure the plate. These all use a 4 x 4-1/2 in plate. If your bin has a different plate, see plate casters.
Swivel and rigid mix. Two swivel and two rigid tracks straight when pushed long distances; four swivel turns in tight enclosures.

Every caster on this page is 6 x 2 in on a 4 x 4-1/2 in top plate. Measure your bin plate before ordering.

Which trash container caster carries the most weight?

The phenolic casters, rated 1,250 lb each. Green polyurethane on iron is close at 1,200 lb.

Do any of these casters have brakes?

No. All of them are plain swivel or rigid.

Can I replace just the wheel?

Yes. Phenolic, polyurethane on cast iron, polyolefin and rubber on cast iron wheels are sold separately in 6 x 2 in.
