Metal wheel casters and cast iron wheels with the look of old factory carts, for restoring carts or for an industrial look on new tables and islands. Wheels are cast iron, semi-steel, ductile iron, forged steel and rubber, from 3 to 12 in, on top plates, a few 1/2-13 threaded stems, or as bare wheels. Ratings run from 300 lb on small semi-steel casters to 20,000 lb on 12 x 4 in forged steel kingpinless models. Bare metal wheels can mark or dent finished floors, so pick a rubber tread for indoor use.

What is on this page

These are working industrial casters and wheels, not reproductions of antique furniture casters. They suit restored factory carts, coffee tables and kitchen islands built from old carts, and heavy shop equipment.

Floors and noise

  • Cast iron, semi-steel and forged steel wheels are hard. On wood, tile or sealed concrete they can dent, scratch and rumble.
  • For a vintage look on a finished floor, choose the rubber wheel casters, or use metal wheels on furniture that rarely moves.
  • Metal wheels handle heat, chips and debris that would cut a soft tread. Most cast iron and semi-steel listings are rated to 600 or 800°F.

Fitting them to a table or cart

Plate casters need four bolts through the plate. Check the bolt pattern on the listing against the frame or a mounting block. The 2-3/8 x 3-5/8 in plate suits light tables, and the 4 x 4-1/2 in plate is the common heavy cart size. For a leg with a tapped hole, the 1/2-13 threaded stem casters screw straight in. See caster plate mounting hardware.

Sizing

A wood coffee table or island needs very little capacity, so the 3 to 5 in semi-steel casters are usually plenty. A rebuilt factory cart with a heavy load should be sized like any industrial cart, with each caster rated for about a third of the total [S2].

Vintage caster questions

Are these antique reproductions?

No. They are current industrial casters with cast iron, semi-steel, ductile iron and forged steel wheels that have the look of old factory cart casters.

Will metal caster wheels damage my floor?

They can mark or dent wood, tile and sealed concrete. Use the rubber wheel casters on finished floors.

How much weight can they hold?

From 300 lb on 3 to 5 in semi-steel casters up to 20,000 lb on 12 x 4 in forged steel kingpinless casters, per caster.

Can I put these on a coffee table?

Yes. Small semi-steel plate casters or 1/2-13 stem casters are the usual choice. Protect the floor or choose rubber.
