Polyurethane is the default wheel material for indoor industrial concrete. Durometer (hardness) matched to floor type drives life expectancy: 85A for polished and sealed concrete, 95A for raw warehouse slab. Polyurethane combines floor protection (softer than steel) with durability (harder than rubber). On rigid steel hub, polyurethane covers 250 lb to 4,000 lb per caster across the durometer range.

Polyurethane Wheels

Best Polyurethane Wheels by Application

The right caster spec depends on the application.

Spec Recommendations

Application-Specific Recommendations

  • Polished concrete and epoxy: Polyurethane 85A on steel hub. Floor protection priority. 5-6 inch wheel.
  • Sealed concrete: Polyurethane 85A or 90A. Slightly harder for less rolling resistance.
  • Raw warehouse slab: Polyurethane 95A on steel hub. Higher durometer for less chip-out and less rolling resistance.
  • Outdoor yard and dock: Polyurethane 95A or pneumatic. Larger diameter (8-10 inch) for shock absorption.
  • Chemical exposure (light): Polyurethane 85A-95A on stainless or coated hub. Resistant to most industrial chemicals.
From the Shop Floor · Mid-sized injection molding plant

An injection molding plant in Plano had been running soft polyurethane (75A) casters on tooling carts across raw shop concrete. Wheels were chunking out at 4-6 month intervals. They re-spec'd to our 95A polyurethane on rigid steel hub. Three years in, original wheels still rolling on most carts. Durometer matched to floor saved the fleet replacement program.

Procurement Mistakes

Common Mistakes

  1. Using soft polyurethane (75A-80A) on raw concrete. The wheel chunks out fast.
  2. Specifying 95A polyurethane on polished epoxy floors. The harder durometer marks the floor.
  3. Mixing polyurethane and rubber on the same cart. Different wear rates create dragging.
  4. Sourcing polyurethane on aluminum hub for high-load applications. Aluminum hub flexes; steel hub rigid.
  5. Skipping the hub spec. The hub material affects load class as much as the wheel does.

Buyer Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What durometer polyurethane for warehouse concrete?

85A for polished and sealed concrete. 95A for raw warehouse slab.

Polyurethane vs rubber for industrial?

Polyurethane outlasts rubber on concrete by 3-5x. Rubber wins on noise and floor protection at lower loads.

Polyurethane vs phenolic?

Polyurethane: floor-friendly, chemical-resistant. Phenolic: handles higher loads and moderate heat. Polyurethane wins on most indoor industrial floors.

Polyurethane on steel hub vs aluminum hub?

Steel hub rigid for high loads. Aluminum hub lighter and lower-cost for medium loads.

Does polyurethane work outdoors?

Yes for short-term outdoor. Long-term outdoor exposure (UV) eventually breaks down polyurethane; pneumatic or solid rubber tires last longer.

How do I match polyurethane durometer to my floor?

Polished/epoxy: 85A. Sealed concrete: 85A-90A. Raw concrete: 95A. Outdoor: 95A or pneumatic.
