How to Choose

1. Confirm the Mount Hole

Grip ring stem casters require a 7/16" diameter mounting hole. Common in office chair sockets, light cart deck plates, and OEM equipment. If your hole is larger or smaller, you need a threaded stem, plate, or expanding stem caster instead.

2. Wheel Size by Application

2" wheels for office chairs and small carts (under 100 lb each). 3" for general chair and light cart service. 4-5" for OEM equipment carts that move 200+ lb single-caster load. Larger wheels roll more easily over thresholds and carpet edges.

3. Tread Material

Soft rubber and neoprene are quiet and gentle on hard floors. Polyurethane rollerblade is durable on hard floors and rolls easily. Twin nylon is the office-chair default for carpet. Hard nylon damages hardwood — check floor compatibility before specifying.

4. With or Without Brake

Plain swivel for chairs and rolling carts. Side brake for OEM equipment carts that must stop and stay. Brake adds ~20% cost. Most office chairs use plain swivel.

Engineer Tip: On office chair sockets, the grip ring is the only thing holding the caster in. After ~5 years the grip ring loses spring tension and casters fall out under load. If you have an office chair where casters keep popping out: the chair socket is worn, not the caster. Replace the chair base, not the casters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a grip ring stem caster?

A caster with a 7/16" smooth metal stem topped by a spring-steel C-shaped clip (the grip ring). You push the stem into a 7/16" diameter mounting hole — the grip ring compresses, slips in, then expands inside the hole to hold the caster in place. No tools required.

How do I install a grip ring stem caster?

Align the stem with the mounting hole and push firmly until you hear/feel the grip ring click. Tug the caster to confirm it is seated. To remove: pry the caster straight out with steady force. Some chair sockets require a specialized tool to release the grip ring — use needle-nose pliers or a thin flat-head screwdriver.

What size mounting hole do I need?

7/16" (0.4375") diameter. This is the dominant office chair socket size and a common OEM cart hole size. If your hole is 3/8", you need a 3/8" grip ring caster (less common). If 1/2", you need a 1/2" stem caster.

My office chair casters keep falling out — is this a caster problem?

Almost always a chair-socket problem, not a caster problem. The plastic chair socket wears out over time and loses grip on the steel grip ring. If new casters from a sealed package immediately fall out, the chair socket is worn — replace the chair base or socket inserts.

Can I use grip ring stem casters on hardwood floors?

Yes — choose soft neoprene rubber or polyurethane rollerblade tread. Avoid hard nylon (twin nylon) on hardwood — nylon scratches and dents. Twin nylon is designed for carpet, where rolling resistance is the bigger issue.

Will these casters fit my Herman Miller / Steelcase / Knoll chair?

Most modern office chairs use 11mm or 7/16" sockets — either fits a standard 7/16" grip ring stem caster. Some Herman Miller and Steelcase chairs use proprietary mounts that require their specific replacement caster. Match the stem diameter and grip ring style before ordering.

What is the difference between 7/16 x 7/8" and 7/16 x 1-3/8" stem?

The first number is stem diameter (always 7/16"); the second is stem length. Most chairs use a 7/8" stem — the socket bottom is close to the chair base. Longer 1-3/8" stems are used on industrial carts and OEM equipment where the mounting hole is deeper. Match length to your existing caster.

Can I add a brake to a plain grip ring caster?

No — brakes are integrated into the caster body at the factory. To add braking capability, replace the caster with a brake-equipped grip ring version. Most office chairs do not have brake-equipped grip ring casters — they are uncommon.
