Shop Pneumatic Casters

Pneumatic casters roll on air-filled or foam-filled tires that absorb shock and bridge gravel, cracks, and dock plates that solid wheels slam over. CasterHQ stocks 8 to 16 inch pneumatic and flat-free casters, 250 to 7,600 lb dual-wheel capacity, same-day shipping from Mansfield, TX.

  • Air vs foam vs semi-pneumatic: air-filled for the softest ride, foam-filled for no-flat service, semi-pneumatic for light no-flat duty
  • Size by terrain: 8-10 in for smooth and gravel, 12-16 in for rough outdoor
  • Over 600 lb per caster? Step up to dual-wheel pneumatic, to 7,600 lb

Pneumatic Caster Comparison

Air-filled gives the softest ride; foam-filled is punctureless. Sized by wheel diameter and configuration. For 600 lb and up per caster, step to dual-wheel pneumatic.

Wheel Diameter (in) Tire Type Load Capacity (lbs) Configuration Best For
8 4-Ply Air 250 Rigid / Swivel / Brake Generator carts, light outdoor utility (from $58)
10 4-Ply Air 350 Rigid / Swivel / Brake Outdoor utility carts, equipment movers (from $74)
8 x 3 Foam-Filled Poly 275 Swivel / Rigid Punctureless service over gravel (from $74)
10 x 3 Foam-Filled Poly 280–300 Swivel / Rigid Heavy outdoor service carts
12 4-Ply Air 450 Swivel / Rigid Heavy generator and equipment carts
16 4-Ply Air 600 Swivel / Rigid Rough-terrain mobile equipment
Dual-wheel 8–10 Pneumatic 1,200–2,400 Heavy-duty swivel Heavy outdoor industrial carts
Dual-wheel 12–16 Pneumatic 4,000–7,600 Heavy-duty swivel Outdoor industrial equipment movers

How to Choose a Pneumatic Caster

1. Match wheel size to terrain

Smooth concrete or asphalt: 6 to 8 inch works. Gravel, grass, dock plates: 10 inch or larger. Rough outdoor terrain: 12 to 16 inch. Larger wheels absorb shock and bridge uneven surfaces instead of dropping into them.

2. Air vs foam-filled vs semi-pneumatic

Air-filled gives the softest ride at the lowest cost. Foam-filled is about 20% heavier and rides slightly firmer but cannot puncture; choose it when a flat would stop the job. Semi-pneumatic (solid rubber on a hollow core, no tube) is the budget no-flat option for hand trucks and light carts, but it carries less and rides firmer than either.

3. Capacity per caster

Total cart weight divided by number of casters, then add a 40% safety margin for rough-terrain shock loading. For 1,000 lb and up per caster, step to dual-wheel pneumatic; we stock 1,200 to 7,600 lb dual-wheel configurations.

4. Brake requirement

Swivel with brake is essential on sloped ramps, loading docks, and any cart that must stop and stay. Plain swivel is acceptable on level outdoor surfaces.

5. Plan the replacement path

On a pneumatic caster the tube fails first, the tire second, and the frame almost never. We stock tubes, tire-only replacements, and bare swivel and rigid rigs from $21, so you replace the failed part, not the whole caster. If you only need wheels for existing frames, shop pneumatic wheels only.

Engineer Tip: On 4-ply pneumatic tires the recommended pressure is 30 to 35 PSI cold. Underinflation kills tubes from sidewall flex; overinflation reduces ride quality and tire life. Check pressure monthly; outdoor temperature swings move it 1 to 2 PSI per 10 degrees F. Carry one spare 10 inch tube per cart in service.

How CasterHQ Selects and Verifies Pneumatic Casters

First-hand from our Mansfield, TX warehouse and engineering desk.

We stock 4-ply industrial pneumatic tires, not the 2-ply lawn-equipment grade, across the full 8 to 16 inch range, plus closed-cell foam-filled no-flat versions for service that cannot take downtime.

Tubes and tire-only replacements stay on the shelf because on a pneumatic caster the tube fails before the wheel does. We also stock the bare swivel and rigid rigs from $21, because the zinc-plated frame outlasts every tire it will ever carry and nobody should buy a complete caster to replace a yoke.

Tell us the terrain, the total load, and whether a flat would stop the job, and we match air against foam-filled and single against dual-wheel before you buy. Stock pneumatic casters picked before 3pm CT ship the same day from Mansfield.

Pneumatic Caster FAQ

What is the difference between pneumatic and foam-filled casters?
Pneumatic uses an inflated rubber tube and tire: the softest ride at the lowest cost, but it can puncture. Foam-filled replaces the air with closed-cell polyurethane foam: punctureless, holds shape, about 20% heavier, and rides slightly firmer. Pick foam-filled when downtime from a flat is unacceptable.
What is the difference between pneumatic and semi-pneumatic casters?
Pneumatic has an inflated tube inside the tire. Semi-pneumatic is solid rubber molded over a hollow core: no tube, no inflation, cannot go flat, but rides firmer and carries lighter loads. Semi-pneumatic suits hand trucks and light outdoor carts; true pneumatic suits heavier equipment on rough ground.
Can I run pneumatic casters indoors on smooth concrete?
Yes, they roll smoothly, but they are over-spec for indoor-only use and the larger diameter raises the cart deck. For indoor-only carts, 4 to 6 inch polyurethane or thermoplastic rubber gives lower rolling resistance at lower cost.
What size pneumatic caster do I need for a generator or welder cart?
For a 400 to 800 lb generator on mixed concrete and gravel, four 10 inch 4-ply pneumatic casters rated 350 lb each, two with brakes, is the standard build. Over 1,000 lb total, step to 12 inch. Over 2,400 lb per caster, go dual-wheel pneumatic.
What is a 4-ply pneumatic tire?
Ply rating is the number of reinforcement layers in the tire casing. 4-ply is the standard for industrial caster pneumatics. 2-ply lawn-equipment grade is too light for industrial service and fails early under cart loads.
How long do pneumatic caster tires last?
Stored indoors, properly inflated, on a correctly sized cart: 3 to 5 years. Outdoor storage in UV sunlight: 1 to 3 years. Foam-filled lasts longer in UV but is still subject to compound aging.
Do you sell replacement tubes, tires, and caster rigs separately?
Yes. 8 and 10 inch tubes and tire-only options are stocked under hand truck parts, and swivel and rigid pneumatic rigs are sold separately from $21. The tube usually fails before the wheel, and the frame outlasts both, so you replace the failed part instead of the whole caster.
What capacity do dual-wheel pneumatic casters provide?
Dual-wheel 8 to 10 inch pneumatic: 1,200 to 2,400 lb per caster. Dual-wheel 12 to 16 inch pneumatic: 4,000 to 7,600 lb per caster, on heavy-duty swivel rigs with sealed precision bearings.
Can I use pneumatic casters in cold weather?
Pneumatic rubber stiffens below 0 degrees F and tube pressure drops with temperature. Foam-filled stays flexible to minus 20 degrees F. For winter outdoor service or freezer-yard handling, foam-filled is the safer choice.
Will pneumatic casters work on AGVs and motorized carts?
Yes, but expect higher rolling resistance than polyurethane or thermoplastic rubber. Pneumatic absorbs vibration, which is useful for carts carrying unsealed electronics or instrumentation over rough floors.
