How to Choose

1. Measure Your Leg Tube ID

Expanding stems install into the inside of hollow leg tubing. Measure the INSIDE diameter of the leg, not the outside. 1-1/2" ID is the most common — if your tube is square or rectangular, measure the smallest internal dimension.

2. Brake Type

Total Lock locks both swivel and wheel — the table will not roll OR rotate. Top Lock locks only the wheel. Side Brake locks the wheel. For prep tables: Total Lock prevents slow drift when food handlers lean on the table.

3. Wheel Material

Gray TPR is the standard for food service — non-marking, quiet, food-safe, easy clean. Urethane handles oily floors better and has higher capacity. Avoid black rubber on light commercial kitchen flooring — it leaves marks.

4. Capacity Per Caster

Estimate the loaded table weight (table + product + tools), then size casters at 1.5x that load divided by 4. A loaded 6' prep table runs 300-500 lb. A 1,000 lb capacity set of 4 covers most light commercial applications.

Engineer Tip: On stainless prep tables, the leg tubing is usually 1-5/8" OD with a 1-1/2" ID. The expanding stem grips the inside of the tube — do NOT try to fit a threaded stem unless your table came with a threaded socket installed in the leg. Force-fitting the wrong stem damages the leg.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure my leg tube for a replacement caster?

Look up the table's spec sheet for leg tube ID, or measure with a caliper. Slide the caliper into the open bottom of the leg and measure the inside diameter at its narrowest point. 1-1/2" ID is by far the most common size on stainless prep tables. 1-3/8" is a secondary common size on lighter-duty tables.

What is an expanding stem?

An expanding stem (sometimes called a friction stem or pop-in stem) has a rubber sleeve over the metal stem. You insert the stem into the hollow leg tube and tighten a nut at the top — the rubber expands and grips the inside of the tube. No drilling or welding required.

Are these casters NSF approved?

The casters are NSF-compatible — they have smooth, easy-clean surfaces and food-safe materials — but NSF approval is at the table level, not the caster level. If your prep table holds an NSF rating with the original casters, replacing with identical or equivalent casters preserves that rating. Confirm with NSF if your installation is being audited.

Do casters lower the work height of my prep table?

No — they raise it. Total height = leg height + caster height. Adding 3", 4", or 5" casters raises the work surface by approximately the same amount. If your prep table is currently a fixed pedestal, casters add roughly 4-5 inches.

Why are 2 casters with brakes and 2 without?

Standard set-of-4 configuration is 2 casters with locking brakes (front, usually) and 2 without (rear, free-rolling). This stops the table cleanly while keeping cost down. Specify 4-locking if you need positive lock on all corners (uneven floors, heavy use).

Can I mix wheel sizes?

No — all four casters must be the same wheel diameter or the table will sit at an angle. Order matched sets only. If you replace one or two casters, replace all four.

Will these fit my Advance Tabco / Eagle / John Boos table?

Likely yes. Advance Tabco TA-25 series and Eagle Group prep tables use 1-1/2" ID leg tubing — standard CasterHQ work table sets match. John Boos may use 1/2-13 threaded sockets on premium maple tables; the urethane Advance Tabco set we stock fits this thread.

Do TPR (thermo rubber) wheels mark light commercial flooring?

Gray TPR is non-marking on quarry tile, vinyl, sealed concrete, and most commercial floors. Black TPR can mark light-colored tile under heavy use. For VCT or polished commercial vinyl, specify gray TPR or urethane.
