AGV Caster Series Comparison

Hamilton Maxi-Duty (MDD/MD) for highest 24/7 cycle loads. Extended Service (ES) for high-cycle but lighter capacity. Match series to AGV payload + duty cycle.

Series Diameter Capacity Wheel Best For
Maxi-Duty Dual (MDD) 10"–16" 8,000–15,400 lb DuraGlide-AGV 95A on cast iron / forged steel Heaviest AGV payloads, 24/7 cycles
Maxi-Duty Single (MD) 12"–16" 5,500–7,700 lb DuraGlide-AGV 95A Single-wheel AGV trailers
Extended Service (ES) 4"–10" 7,000 lb DuraGlide-AGV poly on forged steel High-cycle AGVs under 7,000 lb single load
DuraGlide-AGV 10"–12" 4,000–5,500 lb DuraGlide-AGV 95A Standard AGV applications
Enhanced Precision (EPSD) 12" 4,700 lb DuraGlide-AGV 95A Smooth-cycle precision AGV

How to Choose

1. AGV Payload Per Caster

Total AGV weight + payload divided by number of casters, then add 50% for dynamic shock loads on 24/7 service. AGVs typically carry 60-70% of load on a single steering caster. Size that caster for FULL load with 50% margin.

2. Wheel Material — DuraGlide-AGV

Hamilton DuraGlide-AGV polyurethane at 95A durometer is the AGV standard — quiet, non-marking, low rolling resistance (reduces motor amp draw), 5-10 year service life under 24/7 cycle. Specify this unless wheel material is dictated by AGV manufacturer.

3. Single vs Dual Wheel

Single wheel up to 7,700 lb per caster. Dual wheel doubles capacity to 15,400 lb in the same physical footprint. Dual wheel is the standard for heavy AGV trains. Single is used on AGVs where deck height matters more than capacity.

4. Bearing Specification

Sealed precision ball bearings (1" or 1-1/4") are required on AGV applications — lower drag, longer life, sealed against dust and washdown. Roller bearings shock-load better but draw more motor amps. AGV manufacturers specify ball bearings 95% of the time.

Engineer Tip: AGV operators report that switching from 85A to 95A polyurethane wheels reduces motor amp draw 10-15% on the same payload — the harder durometer rolls more efficiently. Hamilton DuraGlide-AGV is 95A standard. If your existing AGV uses 85A poly, the upgrade typically pays back in 6-12 months on energy alone, plus longer wheel life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an AGV caster?

An AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) caster is engineered for 24/7 continuous operation on motorized industrial vehicles. Key requirements: low rolling resistance (to minimize motor amp draw), kingpinless swivel design (no failure point), sealed precision bearings, and 5-10 year service life under 24/7 cycle. Hamilton Maxi-Duty and Extended Service AGV lines are the U.S. industry standard.

What is DuraGlide-AGV polyurethane?

Hamilton's premium AGV-grade polyurethane wheel compound. 95A durometer for low rolling resistance. Bonded to cast iron or forged steel hubs depending on capacity. Non-marking, quiet, and resistant to chemicals and oils common in AGV duty cycles. The dominant AGV wheel material specified by Toyota, Daifuku, Dematic, and AGV system integrators.

How long do AGV casters last?

Hamilton Maxi-Duty and Extended Service AGV casters on properly sized AGVs running 24/7 typically deliver 5-10 years of service. Wheel tread is usually the first wear item; bearings outlast the wheel. Annual visual inspection plus monthly amp-draw monitoring catches degradation before failure.

What is the highest capacity AGV caster?

Our heaviest AGV caster is the Hamilton S-MDD-AGV-165GB95 at 15,400 lb single-caster capacity (16" x 5" DuraGlide-AGV dual wheel on cast iron). For higher capacities, contact us — Hamilton custom-engineers AGV casters above 20,000 lb on quote basis.

Are these casters compatible with my AGV?

Hamilton AGV casters use industry-standard mounting plates. Match your existing top plate size and bolt pattern. AGV manufacturers (Toyota, JBT, Daifuku, Dematic, Seegrid, OTTO) typically spec Hamilton or equivalent — the casters interchange. Call 844-439-4335 with your AGV model and existing caster spec for direct cross-reference.

What is the difference between Maxi-Duty and Extended Service?

Maxi-Duty (MDD/MD) is engineered for the highest capacities (5,500-15,400 lb single caster) at 24/7 cycle. Extended Service (ES) is the lighter-capacity 24/7 line (4,000-7,000 lb) for smaller AGVs and warehouse fleet vehicles. Both are kingpinless and use sealed precision ball bearings.

Can these be used on conveyor pallet transports?

Yes. Hamilton AGV casters are commonly specified on conveyor-driven pallet transports, monorail trolleys, and overhead crane trolleys where 24/7 high-cycle service is required. The DuraGlide-AGV wheel handles the continuous low-speed loading better than standard polyurethane.

Do you stock all Hamilton AGV SKUs?

We stock the most common 15 Maxi-Duty and Extended Service AGV SKUs in 6", 8", 10", 12", and 16" sizes. Less common configurations ship from Hamilton factory in 1-2 weeks. Call 844-439-4335 for cross-reference and lead-time confirmation.
