Low Profile Caster Spec Comparison

Compare every low profile caster series we stock by overall mount height, wheel diameter, capacity, mount type, and best application. Mount height is the critical spec on low profile casters — if your equipment has 2.5 inches of clearance, your caster must be under 2.5 inches tall.

How to Choose a Low Profile Caster

1. Measure the Available Clearance First

The whole point of a low profile caster is mount height. Before anything else, measure the vertical space between your equipment's mounting surface and the floor. Subtract any clearance you want above the floor (typically 1/4 to 1/2 inch). Your caster's overall mount height must be less than this measurement. Common low profile heights: 1-3/8" (Blickle), 2-3/16" (01 series with 2" wheel), 3-1/8" (03/05 series with 3" wheel).

2. Match Capacity to Load — with Headroom

Total expected load divided by 4 casters = per-caster requirement. Add 25 percent headroom for shock loads and uneven floor distribution. Light equipment under 600 lb total: 01 series (150 to 300 lb each). Medium 600 to 1,500 lb total: 03 series (300 to 500 lb each). Heavy 1,500 to 3,000 lb total: 05 series (up to 800 lb each).

3. Wheel Material for Your Floor

Polyolefin is the default low profile wheel — tough, non-marking, indoor industrial. Polyurethane elastomer (Blickle / Shepherd) is quieter and gentler on tile and vinyl. Phenolic handles sustained heat in bakery and oven applications. Iron and steel-core wheels handle the heaviest loads but are heavier and louder. TPR rubber for hospital, library, and noise-sensitive use.

4. Locking vs Free-Swivel

Many low profile casters in this catalog include side-lock or total-lock brakes. Pick locking if the equipment must hold position when loaded or stationary (medical equipment, AV racks, prep tables, fixtures). Pick free-swivel if it's a transport cart that moves constantly. The A9 dual wheel series is total-lock by default — use that when both wheel and swivel must lock together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a low profile caster?

A low profile caster has a reduced overall mount height — typically 1-3/8 inch to 3-1/2 inch — for equipment where standard casters won't fit under the chassis. The wheel diameter is usually 1-7/16 to 3 inches, but the mounting frame is engineered to keep the total stack height minimal.

What's the shortest low profile caster you stock?

The Blickle LPA-VSTH-35K with a 1-3/8 inch wheel is the lowest overall mount height in our catalog. The A9 dual wheel total locking series is also ultra-low at under 2 inches when both wheels and total lock mechanism are factored in.

Can low profile casters be heavy duty?

Yes — the 05 Series 3" low profile caster handles up to 800 lb per caster (3,200 lb on a 4-caster set), using phenolic or iron wheels with reinforced raceways. Heavy duty low profile is a real category, not a contradiction.

What's the difference between low profile and standard casters?

Standard casters typically run 4 to 6 inches in overall mount height. Low profile casters run 1-3/8 to 3-1/2 inches. The trade-off: lower overall height means smaller wheel diameter, which reduces ground-bump tolerance and increases rolling resistance on uneven floors. Choose low profile when clearance forces it, not for every application.

Do low profile casters come with brakes?

Yes — many models include side-lock brakes (engage from the side of the body) or top-lock brakes. The A9 series includes total lock (wheel + swivel) for equipment that must hold exact position.

What mount types are available?

Both plate-mount (bolted plate, common on commercial equipment) and threaded stem (screws into existing socket, common on furniture and lab equipment). Choose based on what your equipment's mounting surface already has. Plate is bolted; stem is threaded.

Are low profile casters good for furniture?

Yes — the 01 series 2-inch low profile casters are the most popular SKU set for furniture, fixtures, and light commercial use. Choose a polyurethane elastomer or TPR wheel for hardwood and tile floors so it won't mark or scratch the surface.

What's the load capacity range?

From 120 lb per caster (Blickle ultra-low specialty) up to 800 lb per caster (05 series heavy duty). Total set capacity (4 casters): 480 lb to 3,200 lb. Always include 25 percent headroom over expected load.

Can these be used outdoors?

Most low profile casters here are designed for indoor industrial and commercial use. The wheels and bearings aren't sealed for outdoor exposure. For outdoor applications, you'd typically want standard-height casters with pneumatic or flat-free wheels.

How fast do they ship?

99 percent of orders ship same or next business day from our Mansfield, TX facility via FedEx Ground. Bulk fleet orders over 100 casters ship freight (24 to 48 hour transit). Cutoff is 2pm Central.
