Caster Wheel Material Comparison

Every industrial wheel material we stock, with the capacity range, best application, and trade-offs. Wheel material is the single most important spec on a caster — it determines load capacity, floor compatibility, noise level, and service life.

Wheel Material Capacity Range Floor Compatibility Best Application
Polyurethane on Iron 500 to 5,000 lb Hard floors, non-marking Heavy industrial, manufacturing
Polyurethane on Aluminum 300 to 1,200 lb Hard floors, non-marking Medium industrial, lighter weight
Polyurethane on Polyolefin 200 to 800 lb Hard floors, non-marking Light to medium, lower cost
Phenolic 300 to 1,500 lb High-temp tolerant 350F+ Bakery, oven, dish room
Hard Rubber 200 to 600 lb Smooth floors, quiet Office, retail, light commercial
Thermo Rubber (TPR) 180 to 600 lb Soft floors, very quiet Hospital, food prep, residential
Nylon 250 to 1,200 lb Hard floors, chemical-resistant Food contact, wash-down, chemical
Semi-Steel / Steel 500 to 5,000 lb Industrial concrete, dock Heavy mfg, forging, high-temp
Forged Steel 2,000 to 7,600 lb Industrial concrete Extra heavy mfg, kingpinless
Cast Iron 500 to 4,000 lb Industrial concrete Heavy mfg, abuse-resistant
Polyolefin 200 to 800 lb Smooth floors, dry conditions Light to medium retail/commercial
Pneumatic (Air-Filled) 100 to 7,600 lb Outdoor, uneven, rough Hand trucks, outdoor equipment

How to Choose the Right Wheel

1. Calculate Per-Wheel Load

Total equipment + load weight divided by number of wheels = per-wheel requirement. Add 25 percent headroom for shock loads. A 4-wheel cart at 2,000 lb total needs at least 625 lb per wheel.

2. Match Material to Floor Type

Smooth concrete and tile: polyurethane or hard rubber. Soft floors and noise-sensitive: TPR rubber. High temp: phenolic. Chemical/food contact: nylon. Heavy industrial: steel or cast iron. Outdoor rough: pneumatic.

3. Wheel Diameter for Threshold Clearance

Larger wheels roll easier over thresholds, dock seams, and uneven floors. Standard cart wheel: 3-5 inches. Heavy industrial: 6-8 inches. Outdoor: 10 inches or larger.

4. Hub Material Determines Maximum Capacity

Solid wheels (no hub) cap around 800 lb. Aluminum hubs handle 1,200 lb. Iron and steel hubs handle 2,000-7,600 lb. Match the hub to your maximum load.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best caster wheel material?

Depends on your application. Polyurethane is the most versatile (non-marking, quiet, 80 to 5,000 lb). Phenolic for high temp. TPR rubber for soft floors. Steel/iron for heaviest loads. Pneumatic for outdoor. No single "best" — match to application.

How much weight can a caster wheel hold?

Per-wheel capacity ranges from 80 lb (small light-duty) up to 7,600 lb (large forged steel kingpinless). 4-wheel set covers loads from 320 lb to over 30,000 lb depending on wheel selection.

What wheel material is non-marking?

Polyurethane, TPR rubber, nylon, and most polyolefin are non-marking on tile, vinyl, and polished concrete. Hard rubber, steel, and cast iron can leave marks on light-colored floors.

Are these wheels only, or complete casters?

This collection is replacement wheels only (the rolling part — tread + bearing + hub). For complete casters with wheel + swivel/rigid frame + stem already assembled, browse our complete caster collections.

How do I replace a caster wheel?

Remove the axle bolt and lock nut from the existing caster, slide the worn wheel off, install the new wheel onto the axle, reinstall the bolt and lock nut. Total time: 60-90 seconds with the right tools.

What bore size should I order?

Common bore sizes: 3/8 inch, 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch, 3/4 inch, 1 inch. Measure the existing axle diameter or check the existing caster's spec. Wrong bore = wheel won't fit on the axle.

What bearings come standard?

Most wheels include roller bearings or precision ball bearings pre-installed. Sealed bearings available for wet/dirty environments. Bearing type affects rolling resistance and load handling.

Do you stock specialty wheel materials?

Yes — in addition to standard materials, we stock blue solid polyurethane (premium), red poly on iron (heaviest), DuraTough poly on polyolefin (industrial), track wheels, and pneumatic outdoor wheels.

Can I match wheels to my existing casters?

Yes — we stock matching replacement wheels for the major caster brands. If you have the existing caster's part number or specs, we can identify the right replacement wheel. Contact us with the existing caster's specs.

How fast do wheels ship?

99 percent of caster wheel orders ship same or next business day from our Mansfield, TX facility via FedEx Ground. Bulk fleet orders over 100 wheels may ship freight. Cutoff 2pm Central.
