How to Choose a Furniture Dolly

Pick the right dolly by matching four things to your work: load capacity, deck style, wheel size, and surface conditions.

Capacity. Match the dolly to your heaviest expected load with at least 25% headroom. Residential moves usually run 600 to 1,000 lb dollies. Commercial moving companies run 1,000 to 1,200 lb for everyday work and keep 1,400 to 2,000 lb dollies for piano, safe, and appliance jobs. Spa and HVAC moves require 1,400 to 4,000 lb specialty platforms.

Deck style. Carpeted ends for finished furniture (dressers, headboards, file cabinets). Slip-Pruf rubber caps for polished wood, glass-topped items, or anything that slides on carpet. Solid oak deck for boxed inventory and appliances. Steel frame with retainer for gas appliances and water-feature equipment that needs to be strapped.

Wheel size. 3 to 3.5 inch for smooth indoor floors and loads under 800 lb. 4 to 5 inch for typical commercial use, floor transitions, and loads up to 1,200 lb. 6 inch for thresholds, dock plates, and loads up to 2,000 lb. 8 to 10 inch pneumatic for outdoor or rough terrain.

Surface. Indoor finished floors call for non-marking thermoplastic rubber or polyurethane wheels. Industrial warehouse floors take solid polyurethane on iron. Outdoor work requires pneumatic or foam-filled. Avoid phenolic on hardwood. It leaves black marks.

Watch: Oak vs. Cheap Dollies — 4-Wheel Showdown

CasterHQ's owner walks through every furniture dolly model in detail, holds each one on camera, and explains capacity, deck type, wheel size, and use case. Includes a direct side-by-side comparison of our kiln-dried red oak builds against laminated and particle-composite dollies sold by other suppliers.

How CasterHQ Builds Furniture Dollies

Most furniture dollies on the market use laminated wood or particle composites marketed as "hardwood." Ours are built from kiln-dried red oak, the actual hardwood, milled and finished in-house. Kiln-drying removes moisture before the wood is shaped, which prevents warping under load and extends frame life in humid warehouses, cold storage, and outdoor staging.

Every dolly is hand-built by woodworker craftsmen at our Mansfield, TX facility. Frames are routed and finished by hand, edges are smoothed to remove sharps that snag furniture upholstery, and carpeted ends are stretched and stapled by hand. No assembly-line shortcuts.

Stackable design (proprietary). Our 3.5 inch and 4 inch wheel models on the standard 18 x 30 frame are designed to stack vertically on top of each other. The stacked footprint cuts warehouse storage in half. Pull a stacked pair from the truck and you have two pad surfaces side-by-side for oversized couches or large appliances.

Furniture Dolly FAQ

What kind of wood are your furniture dollies made from?
Kiln-dried red oak hardwood. The frame is the actual hardwood, not a laminated or particle-composite substitute that some competitors market as "hardwood." Kiln-drying removes moisture before milling, which prevents warping under load and extends frame life. Every frame is hand-routed and finished by woodworker craftsmen at our Mansfield, TX facility.
Are your furniture dollies stackable for warehouse storage?
Our 3.5 inch and 4 inch wheel models on the standard 18 x 30 frame are designed to stack vertically. The stacked footprint cuts warehouse storage by roughly half. Pull a stacked pair from the truck and you also have an instant two-pad surface side-by-side for oversized couches or large appliances.
What is a furniture dolly used for?
A furniture dolly is a low-profile 4-wheel platform used to move heavy furniture, appliances, and bulk cartons without lifting. Carpeted-end dollies protect finished furniture. Solid-deck dollies handle boxed inventory and appliances. Specialty dollies handle spa, HVAC, and rough-terrain work.
How much weight can a furniture dolly hold?
Capacity depends on the build. Light-duty moving dollies run 600 to 800 lb. Commercial 4-wheel dollies typically run 1,000 to 1,200 lb. Heavy-duty oak and Chicago-style models run up to 1,400 lb. Specialty spa, HVAC, and all-terrain dollies run 1,400 to 4,000 lb. Spec at least 25% above your worst-case load.
What type of dolly is best for finished furniture?
Carpeted-end models. The padded carpet at each rail end protects polished wood and finished surfaces during transport. For glass-topped or polished items that would slide on carpet, choose Slip-Pruf rubber instead.
Can I use a furniture dolly outdoors?
Only with the right wheels. Standard indoor rubber or polyurethane wheels fail on gravel, asphalt, or rough concrete within one job. For outdoor or transition work, choose pneumatic (air-filled) or no-flat foam-filled wheels at least 8 inches in diameter. Our HVAC, hot tub, and all-terrain lines are built for this.
What wheel size should I choose?
3 to 3.5 inch for smooth indoor floors and loads under 800 lb. 4 to 5 inch for typical commercial use, floor transitions, and loads up to 1,200 lb. 6 inch for thresholds, dock plates, and loads up to 2,000 lb. 8 to 10 inch pneumatic for outdoor or rough terrain.
Do furniture dollies come with a warranty?
Most don't. Furniture dollies are designed to absorb daily abuse from professional moving fleets, contractor trucks, and warehouse operations, so manufacturer warranties on the dolly itself are rare across the industry. The frame typically outlasts the wheels by 5 to 10 times in commercial use, which is why we stock replacement casters and components for every dolly we sell. New dollies carry a 30-day return window.
Do you sell replacement dolly casters?
Yes. CasterHQ stocks replacement casters and components for every dolly we sell. See our dolly caster replacements collection.
