How to Choose Your Shopping Cart Wheels or Casters

1. Wheel-Only vs Complete Swivel Caster — Diagnose What's Worn

If only the wheel is damaged (flat spots, gouged tread, locked-up bearing) and the caster frame and stem are still solid, order the wheel-only SKU and reuse the existing frame. If the swivel mechanism is rusted, the stem is bent or stripped, or the kingpin rattles, order the complete swivel caster with stem. Complete casters cost more but install in 30 seconds with a single thread-on. Wheel-only requires pressing out the old axle with a hammer and a 5/16-inch punch.

2. Match the Stem — 1/2-13 x 7/8" Is the Universal Standard

Virtually every retail shopping cart manufactured in the last 20 years uses a 1/2-13 threaded stem that is 7/8 inch long. That's the spec on these P&H casters. If your cart is older, European, or non-standard (some Costco, Wegmans, certain Whole Foods variants), measure the existing stem first. Threaded length matters more than diameter — a stem that bottoms out before tightening will loosen under load.

3. Pick the Wheel Material for the Floor

Polyurethane is the default for retail tile and warehouse concrete. Quiet, non-marking, 350 lb dynamic capacity, decade of service life. TPR rubber and soft blue rubber are for grocery, hospital, and softer floors — quieter rolling but lower capacity (200 lb) and faster tread wear. Polyolefin shows up in 250-pack and larger bulk packs as a tougher fleet option for enterprise grocery chains where wheels get abused.

4. Fleet Math — Order at the Right Quantity

A standard 4-wheel shopping cart needs 4 wheels. A 4-pack covers one cart. A 50-pack covers 12 carts. A 250-pack covers 62 carts. A 500-pack covers 125 carts. Bulk packs save 18 to 32 percent per wheel versus single-SKU pricing. For grocery, retail, and big-box fleets, order at the quarterly replacement level (not per cart) and keep a small reorder buffer for breakage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size are shopping cart wheels?

Standard retail shopping cart wheels are 5 inches in diameter with a 1-1/4 inch tread width. Smaller foldable utility and grocery carts use 4-inch wheels. The 5-inch P&H WC2054LD is the most common replacement spec in the United States and fits Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowes, and most regional grocery chains.

What stem do shopping carts use?

The industry standard is a 1/2-13 threaded stem that is 7/8 inch long. The bearing bore on the wheel itself is 5/16 inch. These three specs (5-inch wheel diameter, 1/2-13 stem, 5/16 bearing) cover roughly 90 percent of retail shopping carts in the United States.

What are shopping cart wheels called?

A few common names: shopping cart wheels, shopping cart casters, retail cart wheels, grocery cart wheels, or by manufacturer part numbers like P&H WC2054LD. The "caster" is the complete unit (wheel + frame + threaded stem). The "wheel" is just the rolling part — bearing and tread, no frame.

Are these P&H wheels universal fit?

Yes for the vast majority of U.S. carts. These P&H wheels and casters fit virtually all standard retail, grocery, and home improvement store shopping carts in the United States manufactured from 2000 onward. If your cart is European-built or older than 2000, measure the existing stem diameter and length before ordering.

What's the difference between polyurethane and TPR rubber wheels?

Polyurethane handles higher load (350 lb), wears slower on hard floors, and is the default for big-box retail and warehouse use. TPR rubber is quieter, gentler on soft floors, but rated for 200 lb capacity. Soft blue rubber is the quietest option, used in hospital, library, and residential carts where noise is the primary concern.

Can I order in bulk for a fleet?

Yes — 4-pack, 50-pack, 100-pack, 250-pack, 500-pack, and 1000-pack quantities ship same or next business day from our Mansfield, TX warehouse. Bulk pricing is automatic on the product listing. For fleet orders over 1000 wheels, contact us directly for freight pricing and consolidated shipping.

Are these direct drop-in replacements?

The complete swivel casters with the 1/2-13 stem drop in by hand-tightening — no tools required, 30 seconds per caster. Wheel-only replacements require pressing out the old axle, which takes a hammer and a 5/16-inch punch. Axle and lock nut hardware is sold separately if your existing axles are stripped or missing.

Do shopping cart wheels come with bearings?

Yes — every wheel ships with bearings pre-installed and lubricated. P&H wheels use dual sealed precision bearings rated for the 5/16-inch axle spec. Bearings are not designed to be field-serviced or replaced separately; when a bearing fails, replace the wheel.

Which wheels swivel on a shopping cart?

Standard retail carts run 2 swivel casters at the front and 2 rigid wheels at the rear. Premium and warehouse-grade carts (some Costco, Sam's Club, restaurant supply) use 4-wheel swivel for tighter turning. These P&H casters are swivel by default — order rigid casters only if you are specifically replacing rigid rear wheels.

How fast do bulk orders ship?

99 percent of bulk orders 1-pack through 500-pack ship same or next business day from our Mansfield, TX facility via FedEx Ground. 1000-pack orders typically ship freight (24 to 48 hour transit to most U.S. metros). Order before 2pm Central for the same-day cutoff. Tracking emails go out automatically when the label is generated.
